Hi:
I know Chris Harper (webmaster) used to have plans for some really nice cages tucked away somewhere here on the website but I can't find them to help you out.
Although I could build my own cages I don't, simply I don't have the time to do something somebody else has already done. $100.00 is not unreasonable to spend to have a good secure cage that helps control the environment too. Aquariums with screen tops are the worst for holding humidity, it all just floats out the top. The plastic based cages hold moisture best. However there are many factors at play here, read further.
You need to look at the bigger picture first: The room you're going to keep the snakes in, is it temperature & humidity stable? Make a stable enviroment outside of the cage, then controlling the inside environment is much easier. My room has a low temperature of 68 degrees at 55% humidity. On the other end of the scale a high of 75 and 65% humidity. I try to keep it like this all year round. My mix of Vision 221's & Precision Cages "small cages" hold humidity very well. The kind of substrate matters too. I use "Zoomed Reptilebark" because of it's ability to hold the humidity.
Hope this gives you some additional information that you can use to plan your herpetariums. You can see some of my enclosures on my website :

I have a custom cage design that I can build. This design is intended for venomous specimens. It allows for the feeding and cleaning of the cage without coming in contact with the snake. It is not a cheap prospect, but it works. If you wish me to build one of these for you contact me at TheWyrmKing@aol.com and we can talk about building you one.
