Ok...so you loose a snake...lets say non-venomous, it gets out of the cage, and after a while you find it crawling threw the house. I`m sure most of you have simillar experiences, my question is: What was the longest time your snake stayed hidden till you found it ? I have a true and ,I say fascinating, story: I have a Great Whip Snake(Dolicophis caspius) which I caught in august 2002. It is a 4 & 1/2 ft. male. In october 2002 it gets loose...I find it on the 9th of march 2003. Then, in late august 2003 it gets loose again...I find it in february 2004. Then...in mid july 2004 it happens again...same snake...I find it after more than 7 months, about a week ago, in late february crawling in my living room. Now that`s gotta be some kind of a record I think. No food, no water, nothing... Pretty weird, huh ?

My carpet python (morelia spilota cheynei) got out but only for a few days. I have a hanging mirror near the cage and he seems to like staying back there. There was a small hole in the screen on the lid that he managed to squeeze out of (he's only about 6 months old) but the problem is solved now.

I had a cribo snake that escaped twice and unfortainly it was missing for 5 months and then I sadly started smelling death so I started look and was hoping it was a dead rat or something but sure enough it was my beautiful cribo. I wish I could of found it sooner but unfortanily didn't. Most snakes that get loose from me are found in within a day. But he wasn't.

I have only lost one snake which was the first, and so far only, grey band I have caught. She's been gone for 2 1/2 years now and I really don't think I'll ever see her again.

Sorry to hear that guys. I also had all my Natrix tessellata escape at once(I had 4 then). I found one 2 of them in the next day. The third in a week and the last one in about 2 weeks. That`s all I ever lost.

I have lost many snakes but the most interesting was a couple of years ago.I had just bought nine baby taiwan beauty snakes from a breeder and had sexed and seperated them,to make a long story short my son who was only three at the time snuck his way into my snake room(before I ever thought about owning hots)and slid open the bin with the males in it.I found four within a few weeks, figureing the fifth excaped from the house.Well around thirteen months later we sold our house and my wife found him behind the laundry dryer, not as big as his siblings but pretty close.I can only assume he was living off the small field mice that would sneak into my basement during the colder months.I still have him only he is around six ft. now.

I have to say I had a very similar story with a spec King I put it in my rack as a neo and it managed to slip throuh the 1/4 holes I searched for it for days with no luck I never told my old lady as she probably would have thrown me out and kept the snakes LOL long story short she found it close to 18 months later about 18" long and as big around as my ring finger and after a hour or so of convincing she now thinks it is a wierd eastern king SHHH
Interesting thread

The only time I can remember anything other than rat snakes escaping was when I forgot to latch the cage with two large burmese pythons in it. They're easy to find, just listen for the crashing sounds.
There's somehing about rat snakes though. I know at least a couple of times I didn't close their containers, but most of the time they've slipped through cracks that I was SURE they couldn't get through. In the last three years (since I started keeping rat snakes again) I've had about 6-7 escapes. Only one was never found (a hatchling corn). One was found a week later, about 15 feet from it's container. All the rest were found anywhere from minutes to days later, but always within about 6 feet of where they escaped. The last one I found after several days because I heard a crinkling noise that turned out to be him exploring a plastic bag right next to the rack...
P.S. This sounds like a terrible record, but I am MUCH more careful with venomous, and have never had one escape.

I am also extremely carefull with hots. I did have one minnor incident though. I was soacking one of my Nose-Horned Vipers in a small container that was covered with a towel. In that time I was chatting with some one on line. I asked him if he wants to see the viper and he said yes. Well, I turned on my web cam, pointed it at the covered container, focused it and took the towel of it. Guess what ? NO VIPER !!! I was scared s**tless. I threw the camera on the ground and started runing around my room like a maniak searching for the snake. I found it of course just 5 minutes later hiding between the heater(I don`t know if you guys know what our heaters look like) and the wall. Another minor incident happened back in august 2002. I was at my grandmothers place at a small town with a friend. We were searching for European Adders(Vipera berus) in that area. Anyway, one sunday evening, in the house, my friend got bitten by one of the adders we caught. In that time I was handeling another adder on the floor we all panicked, mostly I panicked and completely forgot about the adder I was handeling. In about 15 minutes I remembered so I looked under the bed and there it was. I had no dificulties on finding it, it was the only place where it could have hidden it`s self.
Take care & get secure encloseures. Alex S.
