This is not an answer to the question, but I dont belive that if you kill and eat a snake it is any diffrent than when i kill and eat a deer, or catch and eat a fish, or beef, chicken , ect. Killing for food is not wrong but killing out of ignorance is a diffrent thing. but like said before, me and my snakes also have a understanding.

I don't have a problem with people eating species that are in abundance that can handle the loss of individuals like deer, some snakes, etc... But also at todays current loss of wildlife I think it is irresponsible to assume that populations are going to stay at current rates when global declines of reptiles and amphibians are obvious.
I don't have a problem with people eating alligators or bullfrogs because they aren't threatened or endangered anymore. Particular snakes I wouldn't have a problem with either but choose wisely. And if you do kill something you should probably eat it. Except bullfrogs in the west. Kill as many as possible, regardless of whether you are hungry.
And yes I would eat a cat or a dog. They aren't going extinct and you would be making the world a better place by eating strays that damage the ecology of the natural world. They probably taste good too.

While I would not intentionally kill a rattlesnake to cook it, I have picked up a couple Eastern Diamondback that were hit by cars and were still writhing around in the road when I found them. In both cases they were hit in the head or neck area, so the rest of the meat was usable. After gutting, skinning, and rinsing them with water, they were cut into pieces, dried off, dipped in a mixture of flour, salt, and pepper, and deep fried until golden brown, then rained on paper towells. Not too bad, but a little tough. Search Food Network under rattlesnake, and you will find several recepies, like the one that follows.
Philipino Fried Rattlesnake
1/2 pound rattlesnake meat, deboned *see note
1 (8-ounce) bottle soy sauce (can substitute teriyaki sauce)
1 can olive oil cooking spray (recommended: Pam brand)
1 pound bacon cut into 1/2-inch strips
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 yellow bell pepper, diced
1 large white onion, diced
8 large eggs, lightly beaten
Garlic salt (recommended: Lawry's brand)
Black pepper, coarsely ground
3 bags rice, cooked (recommended: Success brand)
*Note: chicken can be substituted for rattlesnake meat
Wash rattlesnake meat thoroughly through a colander and marinate with soy sauce overnight in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Spray olive oil in a heated, nonstick coated wok and sear marinated meat. Set meat aside.
Brown the bacon in the wok. When the bacon is nearly done, add bell peppers and onion and cook until the vegetables are translucent and tender. Add the eggs and stir constantly until they are firmly set. Add rattlesnake to mixture and cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes. Stir in cooked rice, garlic seasoning and pepper, to taste. Turn heat down to keep rice from sticking to wok and mix ingredients well before serving.

That is unacceptable. I understand that if you kill it you should eat it, but I dont think there are too many americans that need to kill there own food to survive. I know a man that says that he kills to eat and he doesnt waste a thing,I looked in his refrigerator and it was well stocked with food. He makes a pretty good living like most of us as well. There is just no need for it. How could you bring yourselves to eat a snake and encourage others to do the same. Thats just sick.

Todd,
your profile says you have quite the collection...I wonder how real it is? I even saw the fierce snake listed.... I know a zoo in s. Dakota that claims to have the only ones in the Western Hemisphere? Where did you get yours?... I know Hank molt offered them for sale, but we all know he didn't have them.
Just curios.
