Jimmy: Several days ago you posted a great photo of a snake for ID found in Phichit Province - central north Thailand. I have not been able to decide what the snake is, but sure would like to know. I have found a web site that might be of help to you in identifying it, although the photos there are a bit rough.
Try http://www.siam-info.de/english/snakes_non-poisonous.html
You might also want to send the photo to these folks and see if they can help:

Jimmy: On the site I listed above, take a look at Genus Oligodon (Kukri Snakes). It could be one of them. JohnZ

Assuming the snake was tiny, it looks most like a juvenile Oligodon taeniatus.
Cheers,
Wolfgang

Dear Anonymous: First of all, never be afraid to express your ideas here! The worst that could happen is you would be wrong on your ID of the snake, and you would learn something new. The best that could happen is you would be right, and a couple of old geezers would learn something new! The photo that was posted by Jimmy was a very difficult to identify snake. Possibly a unknown to science snake! We all seem to agree that the snake is a Oligodon of some sort. (Kukri Snake ). Out of thousands who have seen the photo, there are only three of us, ( Wolfgang, JohnZ, and Anonymous ) who have figgured out the Genus of the snake. You will get a whole lot more respect if you first say who you are, and why you think the snake is Oligodon mouhotiay, and not a Oligodon taeniatus. Point out why you think this way. Point out the details of the snake you observed! It really does not matter if it is right or wrong, what matters is you stated your idea, and why you think it! I have never hunted snakes in Siam, and can only go by books that I have access to. By the books, I am fairly happy with my calling the snake Oligodon. Wolfgang has more experience in that part of the world, and his idea that the snake is taeniatus is probably based on experience with snakes in that part of the world, and could very well be right! But, you think it is mouhotiay, and that is great, as long as you state why you think that way, and as long as you are not anonymous! If you are anonymous, folks are gonna ingore you, weather you are right or wrong. Stand up anonymous, and tell us who you are, and why you think the snake is mouhotiay, and not taeniatus. You will earn my respect just because you are not hiding behind the anonymous thing. And maybee, between us all, we might even figgure out what the kool looking snake in the photo is! Best Regards JohnZ

Shaun: Man, that sounds way better than anonymous! And it keeps you from being confused with those who are posting that the snake is a banded watersnake! I have found about 30 photos so far of adult Oligodon taeniatus, and no photos of juveniles. The adults do show evidence of the double row of spots, which seem to fade as the snake ages, and developes the heavy striping. And the face markings are similar, but are common to many kukri snakes. I have searched the web, and all my books, to try to find a photo of Oligodon mouhoti from Cambodia that you mention, and so far have not found any photos. Can you remember where you saw the photo of mouhoti, or do you have a internet link to it? I sure wish I owned a copy of Snakes of Thailand about now. I also found a photo of Oligodon affinis in the new Snakes of India book, and it looks like a strong possibility, but they say it is only found Ghats India, and not in Thailand or Cambodia. At least, so far! Perhaps it is found in Thailand also, and just not recorded from there yet. Anyway, Shaun, thanks again for posting your ideas about the snake. I believe that you will find that most people here take the posting of 15, 16, 17, and 18 year olds just as seriously as the postings from older folks. Best Regards JohnZ
