I know this is not a venomous question, but I also realize many of you keep non-vens. A friend of mine brought me a neonate Nerodia fasciata fasciata, he thought it was a baby Copperhead. I am going to try and save it, as I know relocation would more than likely result in its demise. Anyone have any captive care info, especially for neonates? It is no more than 8 inches long. I know it is an aquatic or semi-aquatic species, but I have never really had any experience with water snakes of any kind. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Michael: Young watersnakes usually will feed on Mosquito Fish ( Gambusia ), small frogs and even tadpoles. Try offering food from tweezers or just put it down in front of the snake. Some watersnakes even learn to catch fish and tadpoles from their water bowls. JohnZ

John's right about the food. I wouldn't keep a Nerodia, though. They tend to be pretty aggressive and they have pungent chemical defenses. Since you are in the South East (within the natural range of the snake) you should be able to find a nice "protected" water body with lots of mosquito fish/tadpoles where you can release your young Nerodia. You shouldn’t worry about survival; a few decades of breeding can't erase eons of evolution and instinct. Mother snakes don't provide care in the wild. Your baby banded should be fine. However, if you want to keep it, more power to you. I would suggest a cage where he can swim/hunt live minnow until he gets bigger.
