I recently took a pic of a juvi cottonmouth and noticed a very marked 2-tone eye pigment (amber on bottom/lighter on top). Seemed to track scale pigment colors to make unbroken camo. Is this common and is there an explanation as to how/why this is? Thx. much.

Eye color and skin (scale?) color are both generally polygenic traits. The different genes code for an array of proteins (pigments) which then express themselves based on the particular genotype of the individual. People are the same way. I have seen what you are talking about, but am unaware of anybody who has actually studied snake genes at that level (most DNA studies are looking at specific markers to determine evolutionary/phylogenetic relationships). So I guess you have to study it yourself (sounds like a perfectly peculiar dissertation) or gaze into your cotton's eyes in wonder. I, personally, would just get my cotton a pair of colored contact lenses and be done with it:-)
