I dont mean to ask a stupid question, but has anyone ever heard of a "false Mamba"??? I never have, and this shady guy at a pet store has 1 for sale for 120.00. I am assuming it is some kind of colubrid. But, if anyone knows, please fill me in. Thanks, Bryan.

Bryan: Over the years I have seen the term False Mamba used several times on price lists, to describe various African tree snakes. Often these price lists do have the Genus or Species of the snake listed, so you might want to ask the pet dealer to check the price list he bought it from, and see if they list a Genus or Species name. If they do, you can research that and see if the snake matches what you saw. Hopefully, the false mamba at the pet shop is not something like a Pseudohaje goldii. JohnZ

Hi John, the guy at the store didnt even know what it was. It was for sale with the name "false mamba" on the cage. I guess he figured the name alone would sell the snake, and Im sure it will. Some guy will buy it not knowing anything about it. This guy who owns the store jacks up the prices at least 3x as the actual snake value. This is why I NEVER buy off this guy. When someone is trying to sell a baby blood python for 300 then I just walk the other way. But people who dont know any better pay it. Anyways, I was just curious about the name "false mamba". I personally never have heard of it. Thanks for the input. Bryan

Post a picture and we'll have a punt at identifying it. If its green, I wouldn't be suprised if it was a Gonyosoma species! ;-) If its brownish, then I'm betting on Psammophis mossambicus.
Cheers

If it was green and fairly small, then it may well have been a Philothamnus, which are quitesimilar, superficially, to green mambas.

Yes, it is a bright green, about 14 inches long, and the head does kind of look like a green mamba. To me, it looks more like a green tree snake. I will try to snag a pic of him. Bryan
