I was just wondering why some dealers insist on keeping the price of their animals high when its the same snake for sale over and over again. For example, a CH 02 Gaboon is up for $200. I mean $200 for a $50 dollar snake??!!! Also I think the most amusing thing is seeing baby Gilas for $1200. Are dealers this greedy thinking they can get $1200 for a lizard that at least nowadays, is only worth(500-700) I mean after a few years you think these people would get the message when the just pile up clutches of Gilas and they dont even sell 3 at most? Anyways probably off topic but just wondering what others think about it too.

I agree that some animals are over priced. I especially do not like when some breeders feel that the animals coming from their facility are worth close to double the market value, when they are not any nicer than others.
My favorite is when people charge more for "zoo bred" animals. ahaahhaha.
I used to work at a zoo and believe me, we would buy animals from plain ole John Doe. Most of the herps in the AZA zoo that I worked at were either purchased on kingsnake, traded from local breeders, or confiscations from unfit hobbyists.lol. So to me, zoo bred is a JOKE!!!
There is absolutely nothing special about them. They don't poop gold. The only benefit I could see is that they have had fecals run to ensure they are parasite free. But that only happens at some zoos. Sometimes they don't run fecals if the animal is going into the private industry.
Just a side note: I did just sell a gila for 1600 in about a day. I got over 15 email replys in under 10 minutes. That would lead me to the conclustion that their value is at least 1200.
I for one am glad that gilas are still holding value. They should. They don't breed like rabbits. They are amazing animals that should go to homes that appreciate their worth. I am NOT saying that animals with lower market value are worthless. I feel that MOST people who are willing to spend a high dollar amount for an animal tend to have a higher appreciation for that animal because they have sacraficed more money to own such a creature.
Of course there are wealthy hobbyists who think nothing of the cost and the animal as well. But in general corvette owners don't trash their cars, where an owner of a 1993 Honda may or may not treat their car as it should. My opinion has NOTHING to do with wealth. Almost anyone in this hobby can afford a gila with a little bit of saving. That's how I did it.
To me the death of a 10 dollar corn snake is equally as unfortunate as the death of a 50,000 high end ball python. They were both in my care....both had a life that was lost....BUT....
Because money is the life support for our capitalist society and culture it places a new worth on things even animals. The death of a 10 dollar corn snake is sad but not nearly as devistating as the ball. Thus, gilas, beadeds, and other rarer animals should have a capitalist worth (=money).
This is just my opinion and I don't mean any disrespect to anyone, including any zoobies that feel that their snakes do poop gold..lol
Regards,
T

I agree with you on the gilas holding their value...they're amazing aniamls.
However, to me, the death of a $10 corn snake is FAR more disheartening than the high end ball python.

First Anonymous,
While I understand your point, I'd love to know where you saw gaboons for $50 and gilas for $600. I think you might be a bit confused (unless you're just stating what you think thier "value" is, and not what they are actually selling for.) Gaboons have come down a bit, but I have yet to see a gila offered for less than $1200.

Actually, I did see a gila offered for about $350 once (frozen) and I vaguely remember someone advertising last year that they were taking DEPOSITS in somewhere around the $600 range for the upcoming clutch. Could this be what you're thinking of?

Larry, Check any of the importers list. Gaboons are priced at $45.

On the whole Gila situation. I know of breeders out there that have clutches of babies from 03 heldback because god-forbid if they didnt get the $1200 for them. Thats the point I was trying to make, most people in the herp world these days care only about how much $$$$ they can get for something.

I personally would hate to see the day when gilas drop in value to $500.
I feel that all venomous should be much more difficult to obtain. Its no secret that an absolute idiot with a ID and $15-25 can walk into a hot show an walk out with a snake that could potentially be the spark that ignites new anti-herp laws.
Not to mention like Anonymous #2 said America is based on money....if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. People take care of their most valuable possesions. Its a fact of life. So the cheaper a gila gets, the worse off the hobby and the gilas are.
Just for the record I don't breed them so I am not interested in their price for my own benefit.
I would hate to hear of gilas or other venomous being sold for a few dollars in pet shops to the standard idiot (I think it is happening now in places). If the price of gilas and the like, goes down then the process has begun...
Keep the prices high or if anything raise them. My wallet and bank account have NOTHING to do with my wish for high prices. I feel the same as Anonymous #2 its the hobby and animals that matter not my pocket book.
I do see your point about supply and demand, the supply of gilas has gone up so therefore the market should be saturated soon and the price should go down....right? Well...yes in theory, but no in my opinion for the sake of the hobby and species.
Cheers,
Chuckwagon
