I think there is a little more working there than "natural selection", I've seen whole clutches not eat. My guess would be that their natural setting and environment (food, temps, etc.) aren't there. Therefore they are difficult to get started, and require some assistance.
Though I do believe that in the wild there are probably some hatchlings that just don't make it because they are the "runts", natural selection, whatever you want to call it...

I would way that Natural Selection is why they're not all non-feeders, rather than why there are some...
You might also say that it's the reason that some of them are willing to eat what is probably not their natural food (at that stage), while being kept in a box by a huge predator. :)
