Deriq,
Now knowing that you're 38, I can customize this response a little better.
I can fully understand your hearts feelings. I would say that if you plan to return it to the wild...how long would it be, is the question you should ask yourself. A C.Cerastes would make light work of some common lizards, but I'm willing to bet, you'll more than likely have to resort to finding them at your local "mom and pop" pet shop. The lizards I would probably offer up wouldn't be any larger in diameter than that of my index finger. This should suffice enough for the snake.
The snake stops rattling when you go near, because it doesn't want to be detected. These "sidewinders" are ambush predators and lay in wait for that next meal. Let me ask you this...do you see raised "eye brows"? There are some silica like substances that you can obtain that aren't sand, but a substitute, for substrate...in lieu of the dirt. These snakes like to hide just under the surface. He/She also needs water. They don't live in watered areas, however, not offering up water is cruel. One other thing of importance to this snake that's now in captivity is, a hiding place. A non-transparent bowl or box with a hole cut out for it to enter and exit is great for this. It gives them security.
Shifting the snake is by far the hardest, because you're exposed. How long is the snake now? Just guess.
Let me know,
Matt

Well, the snake is about 14in.
I've placed it in a covered box with a solid lid, with air for breathing.
The eyelids are open.

Returning it to the wild is an option I'd like to accomplish ASAP.
I have also read up on some of the habits as well as likes and dis likes of this snake.

The temp here is too cold, it seems to be hibernating. I've read that is somehting it does. I put in water, but what kind of water should it drink?

Deriq,
It's not too cold in LA for this snake, although your nightime temps have been slightly cold, 57 tonight. I'd make my way out of the city and take it back to the desert.
I meant eyebrows not the lids. They should be raised ridges just above the eye. These provide a shade for the eye.
Good luck,
Matt
