I don't know Jim personally. I do have a great deal of respect for what he has accomplished. A simple observation is that he is an x-cop/kickboxer whose love of reptiles has led him to where he is now. His position is now secure and he has become one of the elite. Apparently he doesn't beleive others should have the same opportunities he did. That makes me sad.

If I remember correctly, Bill Haast use to supply Florida with AV before MDFR A/V bank was formed. I dont ever recall hearing Bill gripe about using his A/V stock or pushing for bans in FL when people get bit. I never heard Bill complain of getting wake up calls in the middle of the night. Hell the man once flew to Iran in the 70's or 80's I believe it was to save some one related to the Shah of Iran who was bitten by a snake.

Where would he be now if someone like Bill Haast wasnt allowed to keep legally? HE would not exist. This is outrageous. Its all about him making money and having an easy life. Hes tired of working so he will just take all of the work away and collect his check. He will have a zoo full of snakes and laugh as he sees us walk by with our Ball Pythons and corn snakes(because thats all we will be allowed to keep.)I told everyone a while back that he was a bad apple and everyone jumped all over me. I knew he would do something like this. I could tell he was arrogant. Quote
To those that obviously don't have the ability to comprehend written text. I'll explain it for you in little people talk.....
It's that first statement in the anonymous thread above that turned this thread around.
To the Haast's personal friend. As I stated I made no insult to Haast. My statement was to the people that think that Haast pioneered everything in this profession/hobby.
All I stated was that he provided raw venom and showmanship.
Of everything that you posted, was I incorrect? No. He provided venom for medical research and AV production. Like I said he provided the raw venom.
Also, tube feeding, assist feeding and force feeding are one and the same. Forcing a stressed snake to feed not of it's own accord.... Venom labs do routinely keep animals in the 1000's that feed on their own.
I don't extract but I have well over 1000 animals, all of which feed voluntarily every week unlike one poster claimed to think not possible.
A one man show is rather typical in that situation.
I was unaware of his involvement in new technologies for the Lyophilizing machine... Good to know.
Did I ever compare, bring up or address my accomplishents??? Nope.
So hopefully I addressed everything that a select few didn't have the ability to decipher, seeing as it was in written text as I will not be back.
If anyone would like to further a coversation on Mr. Haast, or Jim or any other subject I would be happy to discuss it via telephone/
605-430-5508 as the "gist" of what is said is difficult for some to understand and I will not continue a thread that is so rediculous.
Enjoy.

"How will it ever be possible for anyone to create a facility similar to Jim's anywhere in Kentucky when it's illegal to take the first step!?! It's a selfish move if you ask me."
It won't be possible, which is just what he wants, to corner the market. I take anything he says or writes with a grain of salt, from his comments about safe practices toward people (yet you see him pin a mamba with his hand and holding a mojave by the head while driving barefoot on a desert road) to his ridiculous comments about how a loose black mamba could kill two hundred people. It's no question to me what he's trying to do, the problem is that you have a few people in here that think they are great friends with him because he replied to one of their threads, thus blinding them to any sensible logic.

Excuse me, but certainly not all "die hard" liberals are in favor of venomous bans. I certainly count myself as an extremely liberal person because I love the idea of civil liberties for everyone, not just a select few in society, but I certainly do not support any kind of ban on animal keeping. The conservative outlook that only us liberals are the ones causing the problems for animal keepers' rights need to check their logic on that one.

You have no idea what you are talking about.
This needs to be cleared up:
The state of KY asked Jim to look over a listing of reptiles that they had decided were inherently dangerous.
I have the list below.
Jim was asked if these animals were indeed dangerous animals. What is he going to say, "No?" Jim did not write the law, or have anything to do with it's conception. As a matter of fact, he's fighting for the right to keep his own animals!
What happens if Jim says these animals are not dangerous and then someone is killed?
I've known Jim for many years and I understand his feelings on the private sector keeping hots. He has always expressed that people should be able to keep hots, "as long as they have access to their own anti-serum". I don't think that's unreasonable. But it was not his decision. He didn't propose or suggest any law.
He just answered a simple question as to whether certain species were dangerous.
You are blowing Jim's involement in the law WAY out of proportion. See list below. If your livelihood depended on simply answering truthfully to the question, "are these species potentially dangerous?"
what would you say?
a) Adders or vipers (Family Viperidae and Crotalidae) (except native species);
(b) Alligators or caimans (Family Alligatoridae);
(g) [(h)] Cobras mambas or coral snakes (Family Elapidae);
(h) [(i)] Crocodiles (Family Crocodylidae);
(j) [(k)] Gavials (Family Gavialidae);
(k) [m)] Gila monsters or beaded lizards (Family Helodermatidae);
(s) [(w)] Sea snakes (Family Hydrophidae);
(u) [(y)] Venomous rear-fanged species (Family Colubridae) except hognose snakes (Genus Heterodon);
(w) [(aa)] Hybrids of all species contained in this list

He didn't just say that they were dangerous.Any idiot would know that they are.He also said that a permit system would be to costly to regulate.(which is B.S.)and that in the absence of a restrictive permit system,"Kentucy Reptile Zoo supports a ban on the keeping of venomous reptiles.We also support the exemption policy as currently worded." Its probably safe to assume that the exemption policy includes him.I believe most of the people posting replies to this thread have him nailed.I would love to see a response to all of this from Jim Harrison himself.He's the one that dissapointed alot of people that respected him,he's the only one that could clear it up.
