I also wrote the reporter:
Hi Sonny:
Nice article :-) Thanks for setting the record straight. I would like to note that freezing the snake the way they did amounted to "Animal Cruelty" The practice has been banned by AZA* Zoo's across the country. The reason why they did this is the SLOW freezing process producing ice crystals in the cell causing severe pain before death. They should be prosecuted for the animal abuse.

the real black eye here is not the press, but the fact that someone with previous drug convictions is EVEN ASSOCIATED with the venomous hobby. This is the bad image that needs to be changed.
Those of us who, follow regulations, ARE PERMITTED, and conduct ourselves in a professional manner, NEVER have these problems, nor do we end up as the items of negative press. That's the bottom line with this hobby. Too much rif-raff.

Ahahahaha! Well, good on them for trying to get some correct info in there. But...CHARLIE DUNCAN?!?! Who the hell is that?! lol Here is a copy of what I sent to the story's author.
"I am writing concerning the recent story on the gentleman who was arrested in Limestone County because of his pet "water cobra." It sounds to me like he had a False Water Cobra, Hydrodynastes gigas, a rear-fanged mildly venomous snake found in South America - not Asia. This snake has no anti-venom available for it because it is not considered dangerous. Only a person severely sensitive (i.e. allergic) to the proteins found in the snake's saliva and venom secretions would be adversely affected. The story you printed is obviously full of inaccuracies and needs to be corrected. Here are two separate sources with information on False Water Cobras: http://www.venomherp.com/fwc.html , http://www.snakemuseum.com/cobra.htm . A google search would reveal many more. As you can see, these are not true cobras and are probably not even covered under the law being used to harass this man. Please correct the misinformation in your story with a reprint and forward the above information to the authorities in your area.
-Chance Duncan"
I guess I at least have to give them credit for trying to fix some of the problems with the first one. Maybe if we can respond this way to all stories involving venomous, we can do a bit to counter some of the issues we've been facing here lately. Probably not...but hey, it's worth a shot.

I have not been able to access and read this story, but I would like to point out that the AZA has ties to API and PETA. They have been actively involved in trying to get reptiles and various other animals banned in NC. Any statements they make concerning private keepers should be considered suspect.

Moccasin Man,
Can I ask where you have heard that the AZA has ties to PETA and such? Why would the zoological society have an alliance with someone who tries to shut them down daily and protests at thier gates?

I usually don't respond to anonymous posts, but in this case I will explain. The NC Zoo (an AZA institution) introduced legislation to the NC senate via Sen. John Garwood that was authored by API and modified by PETA to ban what has been termed inherantly dangerous animals. The AZA gave their blesseing and has positioned themselves as the only qualified sanctioning body to determine who works with these animals. In my opinion they are finacially strapped, their membership is in decline and they have an attitude that reeks of academic elitism. In this situation they have come to an accord with PETA and API in a self serving effort to preserve their very exsistance and relavance. If you want to know more, e-mail me and identify yourself. There is a lot more to this story.

I am keeping anonymous becuase of the fact that I am a zoo employee, and I can see your concern with the situation you mentioned. But how can you let that blanket all zoos? If you did not mean it in that way, then let me apologize, but I gathered from your post that you thought that all AZA institutions, or a majority of them have ties to these "animal rights" groups. If my assumption is correct, please provide me with more examples. If I am wrong, I apologize. All I can say is that the AZA institution that employs me, along with a large number of my collegues and friends who work at other institutions are extremely against "organizations" such as PETA and API. Thank you for responding to my anonymous post, I just do not want my institution attacked because of my concerns. Thanks again.

Actually guys...most of the bans have started with those organizations lobbying state lawmakers. It's really said when an AZA member instututions side with those jerks. A rare occurance but troubling none the less.
