Christopher: There are many great books about Venomous Reptiles out there. You did not say how old you are, where you live, or what books you already have, or how much you can afford to spend on books, which would have helped us answer your question better. I would start with the Field Guides To the Eastern and Western Reptiles. There are several by Conant, Stebbins, and the Audubon Society. Also, depending on what state you live in, there might be a Field Guide to the Venomous Snakes for that State. If you like reptile collecting, any book by Raymond Ditmars, Karl Kauffield, Clifford Pope, Whit Gibbons, Bob Zappalordi, or C.J.P. Ionides would be fun to read. There are many more, and I am sure others will fill in their favorites. Just remember, that the older books will have Scientific Names for many of the animals that are now changed, so they are not the best to learn technical stuff. Most of the Common Names are the same, though. If you have $135.00 to spend, or an up to date local library, the new book by Campbell and Lamar, called Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemishpere is one of the very best, up to date books out there. You can find deals on Ebay on older, out of print books. Also, you might try EdwardRHamilton.com, who sells a lot of bargain books that are discontinued from publishers. There you can pick up very new books by folks like Chris Mattison, sometimes for 10 to 20% of their original cost. Hope this helps some. Best Regards JohnZ

Since you are looking for books that contain information on taipans, a good place to start would be the book "Taipan: The World's Most Dangerous Snake." This was written by Paul Masci and Philip Kendall and published in 1995 by Kangaroo Press. I believe I bought it through Amazon, but not sure. Another book is "Dangerous Snakes of Australia," which covers every species of dangerously venomous snake found in Australia. It has some excellent photos of taipans and everything else. It was written by Peter Mirtschin and Richard Davis, and my copy - the "revised edition", I think there's yet another even later revised edition out there - was published in 1982 by New Holland Publishers in the UK. Both of these books are good, but of course the first one I mentioned is going to be what you really want to shoot for if you're looking for taipan information. Some people have complained that not all the information is factually correct, and there probably is a bit in there that should be changed, but it's still a great book and a very interesting read. Good luck.

The book "Australian Snakes: A Natural History"
by Richard Shine might be worth a try. It is less expensive than many Australian Reptile Books, and well respected. If you are mostly interested in Taipans, you will find much more to read on the web than in books. Try venomdoc.com JohnZ
