Hy guys.
I`m the biggest idiot in the world for not listening to your advice.
Like I said, I didn`t seperate my 4 dobrogean Nose-Horned Vipers(Vipera ammodytes montandoni) at feeding time. I alsways supervised my vipers when feeding them so I could intervene if something looked wrong.
But yesterday I threw in a defrosted mouse in the cage and didn`t survey it. After about 15 mintes I looked in to the cage only to got a huge shock. One of my females was moving(from a lack of a better word) around the cage chaotichly. She had probably been bitten in the head by another viper during theit "feeding frenzee". This species is imune to it`s own venom but this one was probably bitten in the brain or something like this...In a couple of hours it quit struggleing...it wasn`t dead but it could barely move. Now, the only things that show it`s alive are it`s pupils that dilate or contract depending on the intensity of the light, and it`s beating heart. It doesn`t even move if I turn it on it`s back. I feel like crap now. I always hoped that I`ll learn from other people`s mistakes and not from mine...

Alex:
Yikes! That sound really aweful to experience. That happens to us all so don't beat yourself up. Remember these are reptiles, if her pupils are reactive and has a heartbeat/ respiration she may yet recover.
Keep us posted, it's not over yet!

I hope so...but honestly...I`ve seen reptiles in better clinical conditions die. I will be very surprised if it recovers. Thanks for the good thoughts. Thake care...

I am truly sorry about your snake Alex. No lecture here. Live and learn through experience.
Much of the time it is not so much the venom but the mechanical damage done by the bite. It's a deep puncture and if one really thinks about the size of the fang in relation to the size of the snake, it's a fairly significant wound. Especially if delivered to the head or near the spinal cord.
I wish you the best on the snake, these are great little snakes and I fell in love with this species while working them at San Antonio. (Strictly platonic of course!)

Gee Doug, I'm so glad you ended your statement with "Strictly Platonic of course". ha ha ha.
Alex,
I feel your pain bud. I lost probably the most important thing in my life very recently and will probably recover from it, but the fact that it's painful doesn't numb the anguish. You too will recover and will no doubt learn from this experience.
Last fall I had to force feed one of my newborns who would not eat at all...the entire brood was still born with the exception of this little fellow. I had to force feed some small guppies to him (something that would be small enough, yet easy to slide down)...the stress no doubt killed him. He was already emaciated...so this was the straw that did him in. Yet, here I am...still trudging along. Thanks no less to these guys in here.
Take these words and run: "It's not your fault, these things happen, its nature after all."
Cheer up bud...your hurting now, but in time you'll get over it.
Ciao,
Matt

Alex: Sorry to hear about the Vipera ammodytes montandoni. Like Doug said, the mechanical injury from a fang can do a huge amount of damage. This is something that is going to happen from time to time in grouped snakes, wether the result of feeding or not. Sometimes they bite each other just because one crawls over another one and disturbs it, or because they are startled by movement in the surrounding room.
And Doug, speaking of of Veepers, San Antonio, and Losses, I sure miss not having Joe Laszlo there to visit when I travel to Texas anymore. Best Regards JohnZ

Hey Alex,Thats awful what happened to your snake. But don't be too hard on yourself. I too,( along with everyone else probably)would much rather learn from other peoples mistakes than our own.But like it or not we all make them on occasion. What you do with what you've learned from the mistake is what counts.I once had an A.c.contortrix bite another one right on top of the head while feeding them.Luckily, it suffered no ill effects at all except 2 small puntures which I easilly treated.I still keep more than 1 snake in a cage,(working on more cages now)But after that,I ALWAYS seperate them when feeding.Hopefully she will be OK.Good luck, Marty
