I kept gigas for thirteen years, breeding the original pair, as well as some of their offspring. I got rid of them after reading a paper co-authored by a friend of mine, Louis Porras, which went into detail on the toxicity of their venom. It is comparable to that of Crotalus atrox.
That said, they are obviously not as dangerous as atrox. The venom delivery system is not very effective. It has been my experience that the adults are not all that likely to bite in defense, although a feeding response bite is certainly possible. They do get to an extremely respectable size..at or near eight feet, with a reasonable girth. I have no doubt that a large snake could get its fangs into play easily. If you do ever get bitten, DO NOT let the animal chew on you. Get it off QUICKLY. There is no antivenin for their venom.
They are very nice captive snakes. They feed extremely well on a wide variety of things. Cage requirements can get toward the large end of the scale as the snake grows. As far as temperature ranges go, I kept mine in south Florida. On the coldest nights (below 50*F) I heated the snake room with a space heater.
