i was thinking and i've read articles about it, but the EDB was once a snake you could find in most of the state of alabama.....i remember in 1997, i saw a DOR specimen that was over 5.5ft long.....a nice sized snake.....girthy too......but now, i've not seen or heard of one being seen anywhere north of the coastal area of the state...and these are on the decline in most places it seems........how would a single person go about setting up something with the state so that i could breed and release them back to the wild....i have no experience on this and only common sense to guide me, but i've never had a problem picking up on anything before, and this has been done more than once lol....i'd really like to do something, or even get on board with a similar project.....these will be gone one day, and probably in my lifetime

Certaily a good idea. I know of a fellow who actually buys juvy's at the Hamburg show and releases them back to the wild in the coastal areas of Georgia and Florida. I just got back from a location on the panhandle where we saw atleast 30 maybe more EDB in 2 days, so I do think they are thriving in some areas....

near the coast......i'm in north alabama....EDB's used to be up here, now i can honestly say, there probably are ZERO in the wild anymore......i don't wanna randomly release them but find some way to put the population that was there, back........i'd also like some help from the DNR if possible, they may not be endangered or whatever, but they sure aren't thriving.....the example of the passenger pigeon comes to mind, once they were everywhere and everyone saw them, now they're gone...completely.....
i wish i could get some help though.....a network set up......some way to get the public's attention out about the snakes livelihood and how it may depend on us.......about how fragile they are.......and how beautiful.......

Step 1 would be to check existing laws about any technicalities or sticking points about returning animals to the wild. Here in NY, even once native captive animals may not be released into the wild.
Step 2. More importantly, you should use a strict quarantine program, and (in the case of captive-born from other collections) or LTC animals, have a vet clinic(U. of FL. comes to mind) perform serum tests for certain viruses, specifically OPMV(ophidian paramyxo). If you release animals infected with this virus, you will do a lot more harm than good, by spreading this vector into clean wild populations. If this happened to Northern timbers, it would easily wipe out entire dens.
The idea is a good one, just needs to be thought through carefully.

i'll check on the laws, but i've never come across any concerning the EDB......it's defined but doesn't mention it....i'll check on that over the next few days, and also try and speak with someone from the DNR about it......overpopulation would be a bad thing too....i know for a fact though, the population that was here 15 years ago is NOT here today.....maybe there were some studies done.....
as for the vet clinic testing, does MONEY come into play there.......i simply could not afford to pay for a lot of testing, i could pay for the animals, everything necessary for their care of course, but i'm sure that tests to make sure the specimens are all HEALTHY could easily outduel the other costs for top billing (what a pun)
is that something they'd do for free, or would do for free, or what.......i had a local vet that couldn't care for the snakes on the clock, but off the clock he would do all this free stuff......his insurance didn't allow him to mess with hots, but if he wasn't charging then it was a non related matter.....
is the above something that the DNR could help out with....i don't want a paycheck for my time, or for them to own the animals or pay for their food or cages, but help would be great in any form........

If someone is buying snakes from a show and releasing them into the wild they are an idiot. Plain and simple. All it takes is 10 minutes of real research to see why this is a foolish thing to do. Why anyone would do it is beyond me.
