In alabama you can only keep native venomous snakes. Exotics require a permit to keep them in captivity.

well, the law was native venomous only......now i hear that you can obtain a permit to keep non native species, which is great to me, if it's legit.....i'm skeptical though, because nothing in alabama is simple except the people ;)

I haven’t heard anything about a new Permit System, but I agree with Ricky, it would be a good thing. I have wondered if the State of AL ever would decide to Implement a Permit Law. Maybe it is for the Privet Keeper, who knows? You know, I see it as a shame for them to have brought in such a stupid Law anyway. It seems to me that, all Venomous are just as bad as the other, “shoot” a Crotalus Bite is just as bad as a Naja Bite, you Die the same way “Painful and Dirty”. I see the Religious Snake Handlers to be the main reason for this State not placing a all out Ban on all Venomous, but as I said before, it would be nice to be able to obtain a Permit here in AL, but I have my doubts. Why pass the Non-Native Law, then decide to change it later? “Strange”...............................................Be safe ya’ll, Happy Herping Wally

something caused coastal reptiles to update to what they now have for us...use to be different.......but that law started what, 4 years ago? maybe they realized they can make some money off of it......or maybe they're trying to set us up for a complete ban.....

For reference, Coastal Reptiles' page on state laws was last updated 8/4/2004 and I'm pretty sure the statement about a new Alabama law referres to the 2001 change.

Ok guys here is the word for word quote from the 2004-2005 Wildlife Regulations:
"It shall be unlawful for any person to possess, sell, offer for sale, import, or release any non-indigenous venomous reptiles in or into the State of Alabama, except by written permission of a designated employee of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resourses authorized by the Director of the Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries to issue such permits"
So technically, yes, you can get a permit. I knew someone that worked with Wildlife and Fisheries and he said, even though the law says that, they will not be giving out permits to private individuals. That was a few years ago though, maybe the unwritten rule has changed. However I feel that by asking could encourage an investigation (well if he's asking its because he already has some).
In a way, I'm happy with the law. I know there are some real idiots here that I can see getting a mamba or gaboon and getting nailed or letting thier kids get nailed. I work at a pet store now and see how people act with predatory fish and can easily see the same thing happen with an exotic venomous snake.
This is one time I'm kinda happy about the Rattlesnake Roundup in Opp. The guy I knew that worked for the state said originally all venomous snakes were going to be illegal until they realized it would shut down Opp.
