My local natural history museum had a melanistic Aesculapian Rat Snake(Zamenis longissimus a.k.a Elaphe longissima), 1 m long and they told me it was a Smooth Snake(Coronella austriaca). I was 13 then and I haden`t seen either species so I believed them. Theese guys were biologists !!! I measured the snake my self and it was exactly 97cm long(about 3ft). The smooth snake only grows to about 80cm(32inches) and I never heard of a melanistic smooth snake. That snake, even thow it seemed extremely placid at first, was responsible for my first snake bite. It bit my face, straight under my right eye. How many of you guys got their first bite in the face ? :)
Best regards, Alex S.

Alex: I have met a lot of museum Biologists, some with Doctorate degrees, who did not know beans. There are some great knowledgeable ones also, so no problems with them. But when I worked at Fernbank Science Museum, you would not believe the number of folks there who looked down on everybody else. It was really sad. JohnZ

Only people who know what the shift key does are allowed to participate in "spell sniping". :) :) :)
without shift key: do something about it
with shift key: Do something about it.

And on the Spelling Thing, well, I blame my 8`th grade english teacher. She was one mean, nasty witch.
With all of her nasty attitude, and Nouns, Jerons, Verbs, Diagramming Sentances, Participles, it caused me to not care to try anymore to learn good grammar and spelling throughout high school.
I sure hope the house in the Wizzard of Oz fell on her before she could ruin any more students with her criticisms. JohnZ

Hey, Cro..with all due respect..if your spelling still needed help by the 8th grade, there probably not much the teacher could've done about it. That said, I know what you mean about some teachers. With the wrong attitude, which she obviously had, there's not much they can teach to anybody.

Greg: In 8` grade my spelling was not all that bad, I usually made mid 70 `s to low 80`s. What happened was that after one real low grade on a spelling test, that teacher ( Miss Gloria Hickman ) had some things to say to me about how bad my spelling was. So I studied and studied my vocabulary words for the next spelling test. Well, I made a grade of 100 ! I was the only one in the class that got them all right. I was so proud that I had worked hard and improved my spelling, and this Witch teacher, instead of saying that I did good, said in front of the whole class that I had probably cheated! That was not a very nice thing to do to a 12 year old ego. It really hurt. For the rest of that school year, I figgured that if she did not care, nor should I. I passed her class with a B, D, and F grade. So you can see that I started out as a B student, and went down hill from there, largly to how I was treated by her. Oh well, like I said, I hope the wizzards house squished that Witch ! JohnZ

damn.....i never made anything but a 100 or higher (bonus words) on spelling tests....i always thought spelling was easy......science was fun, and math was the most useless and boring stuff....when i got to algebra in 7th grade and the problems started getting a lot longer and more involved, i just did enough to pass and move on to next year

Eh, I still spell like crap. I think it gets worse as I get older, and much of it I blame on this stupid word processor, you tend to get it the habit of just typing and worrying about your spelling later.
