Please dont house two snakes together except when absolutely needed. NOt only can they be cannablistic but last year I almost made a mistake that would have easily been avoided if I hadnt housed them together. I had two western cottonmouths in a nice sized enclosure. I was doing routine cleaning. The bigger one always stayed in the log that I had in the enclosure and the smaller one was always outside the log. I picket the log up by one of the "handles." In my mind, I knew that I had plenty of time to set the log with the snake in it into the holding enclosure I had set up. I lifted the log and the snake came towards the opening. the smaller snake crawled under the log. The snake in the log was right at the entrance and I couldnt drop the log because it would kill my other snake. The smaller snake crawled away and I dropped the log just in time. Almost a mistake that could have easily been avoided. I just wanted to say that just in case someone else want experience the same problem.

I had plenty of close shaves my self with more than one hot in the enclosure. Anyway, I still keep more than one in the cage and just try to be as carefull as possible. Once, I was trying to tease feed a Vipera ammodytes montandoni in the enclosure using short forceps(I don`t have any long ones) and I did something very stupid. As I was concentrating my atention on the viper I wanted to feed I failled to realise that my forearm almost touched another viper in the cage on the head. My arm was certainly in it`s strike range and I have no ideea why the other viper didn`t bite me. They are usualy very agresive and strike at the slightest distrurbance. Anyway...live and learn. Take care...

Doesnt sound like having two snakes in one tank was the problem. Seems to me its your cleaning and handling protocol that is. But hey, hows one more dumbass getting bit going to hurt the venomous community?!

seems like your right on track, & some dumbasses just dont get it! By the way, the snake skins on my wall are very nice, their meat was tasty, & the brothers & sisters of those I consumed could care less. I keep over 30 spicies of fauna and have a great respect for the life the gods have bestowed upon us all. If you feal the need to bad mouth someone or backstab over a broken relationship, please do it over personal email & try to respect those of us who wish serious comentary from our fellow herpers. This is not a forum for closet cases.
thankyou,

In General, crotalids are ok to house together. Agkistrodon can be a notable exception. Piscivorus are, of course, worse than contortrix about cannibalizing. It's also ill advised to keep cantils together, because you just never know. When I had a wintering project a few years back, I put all my Crotalus and Sistrurus in one 3 foot long Neodesha cage. They did just fine! I kept them around 65 degrees, and they remained very placid. Even had some courting behavior when I warmed them up in the spring. The cage held: 3.0 C. atrox, 0.2 C. adamanteus, 2.2 C. horridus, and 1.0 S.miliarius.
Jeremy, it's one thing to know the boundaries of your animals, but the first rule is to NEVER put your hand in a venomous animal's cage while the animal is in it! Even if you think you have enough distance/time, etc. That said, I know people do this anyway.
Greg B.
P.S. As for the anonymous troller, there are plenty of gay herpers on here, you'd best get used to it.

I say what I mean and I mean what I say. I also sign my posts like a man. Everybody was quick to jump on Jim Harrison for "treason against the venomous community" but I submit that it is the likes of bushviper 17 and all the other morons like him that are the villains and are the ones that most deserve to be vilified. Start policing yourselves and the government wont have to do it for you. As for the anonymous poster(bush viper 17) saying someone is gay is only an insult if you believe their is something wrong with gay people.

Risky business, Keeping Venomous Snakes in the same cage. I did keep 3 (Agkistrodon piscivorous) in the same cage at the Zoo. After a wile, it became apparent that they were not the best cage mates. One came up missing about 6 Months after Housing in the same cage. I noticed that the largest Cottonmouth had a tad bit of a fat belly. I guess the Male She ate mad a good meal. Strange thing is, She was 4ft and He was 3 ½ ft long, I would bet that she was hungry, I mean “shoot” that is one heck of a meal. I have heard stories from other Keepers that had smaller Snakes come up missing, because of caging them together. I would never advice anyone to house Agkistrodon’s “especially piscivorous” together. The big factor with Keeping 2 Venomous Snakes together is that its hard enough to keep eye on 1, much less 2 at a time. I will never Keep more than one Venomous in a cage anymore. It just makes for a nervy situation .................Be safe ya’ll, happy herping Wally
