When I was there in 2000, the southeast corner of the state was excellent for atrox and scuts. Just outside of Bisby, Highway 191, also known as Wilcox Road, produced 4 scuts and 3 atrox in only two nights of night driving. Be wary of the law. At that time, you had to purchase a 3 day hunting license to go herping. It cost me $38 and was obviously well worth the investment.
Be alert for the Border Patrol. I lost an approx. 4 ft. atrox when they pulled their van up and demanded to know what I was doing (as if I was searching for drugs with a hook and grabstick). After losing the snake in the scrubs on the side of the road, I turned and frustratingly told them I was hunting illegal aliens. Luckily, they had a sense of humor.
Hope this helps.
Happy Herping,
Rich
