I live in Colombia, South America. I have always been festinated by snakes. Probably since I was just a kid and a friend of mine had one as a pet. But until recently I had seen very few in the wild...
I bought a farm 2 hours from Bogotá D.C. the capital of Colombia (tropical climate). The farm has nice constant spring like climate and has all kinds of snakes. I want to learn how to handle (at least enough to be able to safely take them out of the house), and in general to distinguish them. Grate if I know which I could handle with my hands.
Last month, at the farm, in one the bathroom I found a baby 6, 7 inch "Z". I don't exactly know the correct name, very dangerous, at least I was told. And it did have a temper, wouldn’t stop striking (probably named for it’s z like pattern on its back). The day before that found a 2 foot coral eating another snake(1 foot, brown), in the dining area.
Yesterday nigh I found another, this one, I'm not sure what it was and couldn't get a photo of it unfortunately, but would like to know what it was (very nice). Probably a young, didn't strike like the "Z" but about the same size 6 or 7 inches long, was all shiny black, both on top, bottom, and head, except for a red dot on top of its head.
This one like the rest I managed to get them onto a long broom stink and take it safely to far from the house. Unfortunately this time it fell. I thought I had died because it didn't move at first, and couldn't get it onto the broom stink so I gently picked it by its tail and pulled it onto the broom stick so that I could transport it. This morning I checked on it and it was gone, hope its ok.
Know the story was pretty long, but thought was interesting. Where can I learn, I have found some books but most are on Australian, African or North American species? Does anyone know or have an Idea what this black snake with red dot was?
Thanks.

Since no one has responded to this yet I thought I would go ahead. Forgive my lack of information here, I do not know what kind of snake it was myself. But I do know that there is a book, Snakes of South America or something like that, that is commercially available. You may want to go to Amazon.com or something and do a search. I've seen this in a petstore before, and I was pretty sure I had bought it, but I've looked and can't find it anywhere. Hope this helps a little.
