Kieron: I am not awair of any Scientific Papers that say that Hognose Snakes will make good pets, but almost all of the Field Guides for snake identification say the snake is harmless or non-venomous. Also, if you search the web, you will find many sites like this one http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/natsci/herpetology/FL-GUIDE/Heterodonplatirhinos.htm
from the Florida Museum of Natural History which say the snakes are harmless and non-venomous, even though that is not quite correct.
As far as the gigas, well, everyone I ever met was nasty tempered, and ugly, so I really can`t understand why anyone would want to keep them. I guess they must serve some purpose though, or they would not have been invented. JohnZ

Hi,
Well i totally disagree with, "Cro", about gigus (FWC)having kept two for the last year i find them one of the most intreasting spiecies about.
My two are not, "nasty tempered" but general vey inquisitive and intreasted by everything that moves.
When they where younger they would pretend to bite but never truly did.
Just remember that these guys are very food orientated so use tongs not fingers, 'cause you really would not want to be hammed by one of these guys from what i've heard. Oh and these chaps need a big tank.
Venom from what i've seen and heard it is quiet potent but as these guys dont have a very effective deilivery system, unless you let them chew on you but you would need the brains of an expired lemming, to let them do that. So keep them away from kids.
As for scientific papers not sure but thier is lots out there on the web, just take with a pinch of salt.
Hoggies, well i know very little about them except they are ment to be "sweet" if thats what you want from a snake.
Anyway happy hunting
Wil.

Wil: It is good that you found gigas that made good captives. Most of those I dealt with were large, wild caught, tick infested, and nasty, but perhaps the ones being bred in captivity are nicer tempered. I sure hope so, as the wild ones were no fun at all. JohnZ
