i have a small ball python sorry it isnt venomous but this is urgent i have already moved her away from my other vivs but am worried about cross contamination by handling the infection is leaving her skin bare of scales after an initial "chalky" deposit (fungus?") has coverd a small area about the size of my fingernail the fungus is very dry and is seeming to slowly spreding up her back towards her head thanks if you reply all comments welcomed i really dont want to have any spread of this i dont expect a veterinary answer any ideas would be great.

Kieron: Keeping the snake isolated from your others is a good first step. Try to allways service its cage last, and keep washing your hands and equipment like tongs and hooks between handling your snakes. Also, try to sterilize things like water bowls in a hot water / clorox solution.
It will be difficult for folks here to determine if the snake has a fungal infection or something else, just based on a description. If you live near a zoo with a reptile department, or perhaps a herpetological society, maybee someone there would be able to help you determine what the problem is. It would also be helpfull to folks here if you could tell us how the snake is being kept, like what temperature, humidity, and substrate you are keeping the snake at. If you could post a photo of the problem area, that also might prove quite usefull.
Hope this helps a little. JohnZ

Kieron: You are keeping the python at a fairly high humidity, and if it is a fungal infection, that could help it spread. I do not know if it is a fungal infection or not, but it would not hurt the snake to treat it as if it was. If you could keep it in a less humid area untill it heals, and use a topical anti-fungal on the wound, it just might work. I do not know what you have available in England, but would guess that any of the anti-fungal treatments for humans, like those for athletes foot, would work on the snake also. Perhaps a salve type that is grease based would stay put longer.
As far as the substrate, well I have never cared for the coconut, or other barks all that much. They do look good in a cage, but offer a lot of hiding places for vector animals like mites, and one never knows what they might be contaminated with. It might be best to place the snake on newspaper until it heals up.
I would still try to find someone in your area who can take a look at the snake and offer a better opinion of just what it has, and how to treat it.
Best Regards JohnZ

The only pic I have ever seen of a fungal infection was when Phillip came to the Doctor's office and wanted vaginal creme for his Vaganitis.
