Well I suppose in the literal sense its not really an apprenticeship but here goes. I am 23, native Floridian, and have been catching snakes around here my whole life. As far as hots go that means mostly coral snakes until recently. In any case I am curious if there is anyone in the central florida area that would allow me to apprentice with them so I can gain some first hand experience with hot reptiles before I decide if it is really something I want to do. If anyone is interested please let me know, either here or through email: ophiophile@msn.com . I do have a specific interest in gila monsters, so if anyone here keeps them that would be really great...if not it doesn't matter. I have been considering hots for a long time, and would really appreciate an opportunity to learn from someone with experience.

First things first. The photo of you holding the cottonmouth barefooted is a wee bit careless..... Unless you can write your feet off as a loss of course! :-)

Well barefoot maybe wasn't the most brilliant idea in the world, however, there is no way it could tag my foot with out me dropping it. The only place I would be dropping it would have been in the tub directly behind me ( where it wouldn't be able to get to my feet) Anyway what good would your average pair of athletic shoes be? Now, while holding the snake for the purpose of the picture was not the most brilliant thing in the world...but being barfoot really has little to do with it.

When you break the rules of venomous keeping, you jeopardize the right to keep venomous reptiles for the rest of us. It's the beginners with limited knowledge that end up on the evening news or the front page of the newspaper. The entire legislative movement in South Carolina was sparked by the cobra bite of a very ignorant keeper. I for one do not take it lightly that I may lose my animals over the actions of Darwin award nominees. For the rest of us, please tighten up your handling protocols please.

I dont keep it. It was a catch and release. Not to be argumentative because I'm here to learn, but again how would shoes have really helped me in this situation? The only way it could get to my feet would involve me letting go of its tail. I would think it would be much more likely to bite me any number of places before my feet were an issue. Anyway like I said I'm not trying to be argumentative, but telling me I need to do it better doesn't help with the right way to do something. As for the snake it self it was rescued from my parents, who would have preferred to "save" it with a shotgun and relocated to a more remote area.
