Here's my position on the guy posting the freehandling picture.
1) (Sensationalism) The guy in the picture who is handling a puff adder is doing so for religious, not sensational (outside of his own congregation) reasons. In doing so, he opens himself up to risk of being bitten. As I understand it, this has already happened many times. I can only hope the man does not suffer or die from his actions.
2) (Influence) His congregation is "taking up serpents" with him. Manny Rubio's book shows this kind of thing is not limited to the pastor. Nor does the pastor "influence" the congregation to do so. Their Church makes this claim, not any individual pastor. It can be argued, however, that the teachings do NOT hold that taking up serpents is a means to salvation, indeed, I don't think they claim this. It's just a sign of one's personal faith. So, the people can always say "no." That said, I don't know of any social pressures within their Church to take up serpents. I don't think the adherents to this religious sect are going to be a problem for hot keepers.
3) (Kids on this site) I doubt any kid on this site who could be influenced to take up serpents is even old enough to acquire a puff adder or a canebrake, failing finding one outside. If that's true as the rule, there may be exceptions. That's not what this is about. In short, the concern of influence is probably a bit overstated. Still, I feel that such photos, if they are posted, and allowed, should have a disclaimer attached, on a per post basis. This should be the responsibility of the poster. Failing this, the photo should be deleted by they SHHS Web Team members, after they are ALL aware of it, or have previously agreed on a course of action.
4) Those who like to post that such religions are backwards are free to not practice. There are as many religions as there are people on earth.

Oh wow. This sounds like cross between (the out-takes of a McDonald's commercial) X (Venom E.R. Hits the streets) X (A watered down version of Deliverance).
Yes, this person is not one whom we should look up to for handling instructions. If he got bit by my 7 foot long Naja haje, I doubt he'd be so glib.
Thanks for the story, fizz. It was almost surreal but for the fact that I know you're not lying.

it's on video....i never saw it, and this was a couple of years ago, but yeah, all true....i honestly think that he handles them for the "oooos and ahhhhs" more than for the religion aspect......the way the film crew was there, the way he seems to be the only guy who will openly talk about it, etc.......just too "public" for it to be all about religion......now i don't agree with religion at all, but i DO respect those that do as they say others should......no respect for those who say they believe this but really believe nothing......don't like those who are religious for show.....

you aren't supposed to tempt god..........
there are 1000 different versions of religion for a reason......people modify it to fit their ideas......that's why i don't believe in an omnipotent being, just that the bible was like aesop's fable....meant to guide us with what i consider to be common sense mixed with someone's preferences......it's accurate about some things, some things it's not.....it's open to interpretation because hey, that makes sense....times change, so leave it symbolistic and open to interpretation, and you have something that can stand the test of time.......i think it's great as far as giving people hope, something to believe in in a world that can kill you any second, but people just take it the wrong way sometimes i believe.......take it all too far.......let it guide you.......i know what's right and wrong because of how things affect me.....i don't want someone to hit me in the face for no reason, so i won't do that to anyone else......just common sense, it's lacking nowadays

Very nicely put fizz.. All religions are man made. It is just culture that makes a religion dominate in an area or country. I am not saying religion is a bad thing at all, it is a good thing based on a way we should try to live our lives. Religion is modified to fit our own purposes and beliefs. If people would investigate the history on any religion, instead of just believing what preacher Joe said on Sunday, then the truth comes out. Bryan
