Bryan: It is great that you will get a chance to hunt reptiles in South Africa.
I would suggest you spend $32.50 on Amazon.com, and purchase the book:
( Field Guide to the Snakes and Other Reptiles of Southern Africa by Bill Branch, ).
It is a good book, and the information is very up to date for that region.

Bryan,
You can find reviews for two books on African snakes in our reviews section.
They can be found here:
http://www.venomousreptiles.org/reviews/detail/8
and here:
http://www.venomousreptiles.org/reviews/detail/137
Personally, I would recommend attending the show in Daytona and visiting Larry Kenton's booth (Maryland Reptile Farm) and the other book dealers that faithfully attend each Daytona show. They will have a wealth of herp books covering the area of your interest.

I agree with CRO. Branch's field guide will serve you well. A good friend of mine recently returned from 2 weeks in Kenya & the surrounding areas. He saw a lot of animals, but only one snake. If you have the opportunity to look specifically for snakes, you will no doubt do better.

Bryan: From looking at the list just posted by Phillip, it seems there are some great snakes in South Africa to search for. You might also notice that quite a few of them are quite hot. Before you go afield there, make sure you know where the nearest medical facilitys are that might stock anti-venin, just in case you run into the wrong end of one of them. Wish I was going along, as it would be quite fun to see many of those animals in the wild.

Bryan: Another thing to be cautious about when visiting South Africa is that 1 in 5 of the adults there have the HIV ( Aids ) virus. This is probably politically incorrect, and perhaps there is no danger of them passing it to you by way of food preperation, or mosquito bite, or other route, but then again, do you really believe the government when they say it can not be spread that way? It would make me somewhat concerned knowing folks who were infected were preparing meals, or possibly working in the medical field there. Just be carefull. Here is a link if you have not heard about the 20% infection rate there.
