Has anyone ever found hognose snakes around the Nashville area? I was up there on the 20th at a Dave Matthews Band concert and while we were waiting I checked out a few good spots and it looks like good habitat. I would like to go search some more if they are around that area. I believe we were in Antioch,TN.

Jeremy: The area around Nashville is well within the range of Eastern Hognosed Snakes. I would look for sandy habitats, perhaps along river floodplains, with a population of toads, and abundant lakes or ponds.
Speaking of Hognosed Snakes, I found another one today in my back yard. It is a year older than the one in the photo I posted in Field Photos, but looks really similar, and is probably from the same mother, just a year older. I was just standing on the back porch about 3:30 pm and it came crawling out from under a fig tree. It was obviously hunting, with its tongue flicking and winding its way through the grass in the shade next to the house. There are lots of toads in the area because of a small pond about 50 feet away where they hatch out. I just left him there, and perhaps will see him again. I have put out tin, but they dont seem to like living under that.
Good Luck on your hunt at Nashville. Best Regards JohnZ

Thanks alot John. I have never even seen a hognose in a zoo or anywhere. The field guides say that I am in hognose range but I have yet to find one. Thanks.

Jeremy: They are really picky about living in Sandy areas. They like to dig burrows in loose sand and especially like to make burrows under rocks and concrete and other heavy objects. Very often you can flip stuff and not see nothing except a slight evidence of something that has been tunneling around. If you take your snake hook and run it along the way the tunnel goes, you just might find a Hognosed Snake that is just underground in the tunnel, but not visible when you first flip the tin. Also, the place has to have a good Toad population, so has to be near a pond, lake, or river where toads hatch out. The times I have seen Hognosed on dirt roads has almost always been late afternoon, about 4 hours before dark.
I think they might be more rare today than they used to be. Perhaps it is because there are more pesticides being used on the insects that the toads eat, which builds up in the snakes. Hope this helps some. JohnZ

That helps alot. The hognose is a snake that I would really like to see in the wild. My friend found one at Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee but I didnt get to see it.

In all my Herping time, I have only seen one Eastern Hognose. She was about 3ft. Long and really put on a show for me. A Boy I know from Huntsville brought one he caught in Willer Wild Life Refuge. I told him to take it bake to the same place he found it, so it could fulfill its spot in the scheme of things. I don’t know if He took my advice or not, but I hope He would have the sense to do so......................Be safe ya’ll, happy herping Wally

as horrible as i am at locating snakes in the wild, i have found more than a few at my dad's house in florence alabama.....i caught the same one 2 times in one week because it had got stuck in the pool filter trap a couple of times.....i've never seen one longer than 2 feet though.....one did "perform" for me, but that was the only time because the others just slithered away when i sat them down.......i moved out of his house in 99 and have only seen one since, but i'm not down there nearly as much......
