Why couldnt people just start groups and let work with zoo officials and have the banks set up at major zoos around the country. Have them store it and have it on hand but the "community" on the outside pay for the project?

why on earth would you want to buy antivenom on your own????? First and foremost, are you going to self-administer it??? Hospitals to not allow patients to take "home meds" in their facility because they do not know where the drug came from, how it has been stored, if it has been adulterated, and on and on. Even if you invest 6 to 8 thousand dollars in antivenom, are you willing to reinvest that amount every 3 or 4 years when it expires. It makes much more sense to know that your local hospital has CroFab. Of course, if you undertake exotics, all bets are off...

Are you seriously kidding??? Keep antivenom stocks at a "regional" facility????? How long, realistically, do you think it would take to transfer the product from the repository to the needed site? And once the request is made, transportation secured, and delivery accomplished, then the product still has to be reconstituted and administered. And "traffic is horrible", the police car is "stuck in traffic", and so on. I can see it now. Do you also advocate keeping drugs to treat, say, myocardial infarction in a regional site to be sent to a hospital if needed. Those are called drug wholesalers. If that were an acceptable model then hospitals shouldn't need to keep any drugs on hand, just order them when they need them. I personally think that snakebite is a medical EMERGENCY, and time is critical. I know of a timber rattlesnake bite victim who was dead just hours after the bite. In a location where the ED had no antivenom, and it was a situation somewhat like you describe in this regional concept. I personally want the medicine in the ED I show up in, just like I want TPA when I have my heart attack.
