Can anyone tell me if hognoses posess venom glands or if the toxins involved are saliva based? Thanks I just noticed what looked like a gland structure around the sides of his head. Is this muscle or does he just posess a fat head. Please I know its an easy one for the anonns to play with but all true replies appreciated thanks to phobos 4 your info and BGF on hog toxins etc. If you do read this Brian or Al or anyone who can explain in easy terms to me about the toxins and associated science paper that Dr Fry has or is completing regarding this subject it will be greatly recived. I expect bushviper17 might be interested 2 let me know thank you kieron.

Don't worry about it, Kieron.
There are plenty of adults here who can't spell in their own language let alone post on a board from another country and ask intelligent questions.
I think your question has merit. I just don't have the answer on hand.
Good luck,
Karl

Yes hognosed have venom glands and produce true venom. However, not in quantities normally sufficient to cause notable reactions, although there is one spectacular bite posted on the web
www.herpnet.net/bite/
All the stuff about the big teeth being for popping toads is wrong, the teeth are for delivering the venom.
Cheers

Hey Keiron:
Don't worry about your spelling. Insecure people pick on people just to make themselves feel superior. Ala they are doing is displaying how small mined they really are. Nobodies spelling is perfect, that's how they can declare a winner in the National Spelling bee in the USA.
Sorry, Rear Fangs are not my area of interest, so I can't help you here but I agree with Karl that it's a good question.
Good luck,
Al

Thanks guys i have taken another look at the site suggested by Dr fry or BGF and there is a link relating to Hognoses bioligy and feeding etc.On this i found some interesting totally opposite things like; they do not posess a venom, that most invenomations are caused by the Easten hog. it also describes Toad piercing fangs with no grooves or canals to deliver venom,. even though it claims they dont produce toxins please all look and let me know BGF never posts unless he has a genuine reason so can anyone tell me why there is such a discrepency. P.S. BGF have you completed any venom/toxin reports that i can look at. To maybe even try to put up a small hognose info site. im not sure, Help herpers we must agree on a snakes taxonomy as they are all the sameish? in there same sub family group gotta stop will ramble on forever otherwise. cheers Al and BGF or DR Fry please let me know if you only want nickname used please many thanks Kieron.

Here's a link to a paper we published on colubrid venoms that included western hognosed
http://www.venomdoc.com/downloads/2003_BGF_Colubroidea_RCMS.pdf
I'm not too fussy about titles but if you prefer to be formal, I go by 'Princess White Devil'
;-)
Ciao
