I am in the process of building a naturalistic enclosure for a group of A.c. contortrix. Which substrate is the safest, I mean if the snake accidentally ingested it while feeding? I have always kept them on newspaper, easy to clean etc. Here is what I had thought about, a few inches of sphagnum peat moss with a light layer of leaves. The enclosure will be water-proof, which would allow for an occasional misting. Accidental ingestion of the substrate is my main concern. Thanks for any and all advice.
Best regards,

I keep mine on cypress mulch because you can get it wet and it won't mildew.
If you really want it to look natural, here's a recipe:
2 parts cypress mulch
1 part aspen shavings
mix well
sprinkle on a few handfulls of dried oak leaves and pine bark nuggets
fold in one nice piece of drift wood and some dried grass standing up in a corner.
et voila
instant forest floor.

Hi i keep my snakes almost exclusively on a cheap substrate called savannah its very moisture absoebent so will certainly not be best 4 all snakes the other i use is ash chip in either fine for baby snakes incase of ingestion so thy can pass it and slightly bigger for my royal and Dumerils as i dont keep "hots" . Oh i also use another substrate that allows my hognose to tunnel about, its a commercial brand in England and ive used it and thrown the bag out but it is like very fine shavings but isnt good if ingested to much i havent had a problem with it but ther are deffininte no-no, types of wood substrates as if ingested they can poison the snake i hpe someone will read this and tell you the culprits that are dangerous as i dont have the info here and dont want to post a wrong fact, i will get a list unless one is posted before i get the chance to use the computer again (missus) gets a bit annoyed!
