I was lucky enough to find a can of this last year and didn't have a need to use it until recently. I asked someone about the method of use and was told you could spray it directly on the snake. I had read this in the past also. But this person told me not to spray it on colubrids. I didn't think to ask why until I was on my way home. Can anyone explain this to me? Why would you not spray it on colubrids? Also, is there any other info I need to know before using this stuff? Thanks in advance! Clay

ack! -- Black Knight was a byproduct of nerve gas production. Bury that stuff in your worst enemies yard and go get some proventamite.
Sawyer Tick Repellent (.05% permethrin, $2 a can at CVS pharmacy) is the same thing as proventamite. Take the cage and water dish out of the cage.
Spray the substrate with about 1.5 second burst per square foot. Let the substrate dry completely (a couple of hours)
Then replace snake and water dish.

"Black Knight was a byproduct of nerve gas production."
By any chance could you cite a source for this bit of info? Not that it's necessarily meaningful anyway...lots of useful and safe products are byproducts of nasty chemical processes that you wouldn't want to be around before they're done...

I'm not familiar with Black Knight..but I know that 5% Sevin dust works on mites (as well as on fleas on dogs). Put a snake in a bag with a teaspoon or so of Sevin, & shake. Remove all substrate from cage & clean cage. Put a thin layer of Sevin on floor & replace substrate. Replace snake. Wait a couple of days before replacing the water dish.

LOL...Nerve gas.
Black Knight was used for commercial airlines to knock down flying/and other insects and I have used it for years with no problems whatsoever in a collection of hundreds of priceless animals, including colubrids. Just use if sparingly as you would any product.

Forget all of those chemicals. If it kills mites, it will kill your snake. The best thing I have ever used for mites on a snake is a good ol bottle of cheap canola oil. Rub your snake down with it, 3 x a day for 3 days, while keeping it in a pillow case. Very safe to use, and wont kill your snake. Bryan

You can find Diatomaceous Earth at Aquarium Shops and also in Swimming Pool Supply Shops, and even at Home Depot and Lowes in the pond supply area, where it is used as a filter material. Sprinkle it in the cage with the mite problem. It is harmless to the snake and dessicates the mites, causing them to die. It can also be added to human foods like flour, cornmeal, grits, pancake mix, rice, and other food stuffs prevent weavles. JohnZ
