Howdy, folks. I'm just back from a summer of herping (It is a grand thing to be a teacher at times). As some of you already know I'm working on my Master's thesis. As I was talking to a gentleman from the Edisto Island Serpentarium the topic came up of marking snakes. Being a traditionalist, I tend to clip scales. This fella said he'd heard tell of mini brands (similar to those used on cattle) that were more efficient than scale clipping. Additionally, these brands could be made specially such that you know for a fact that YOU made the mark and not someone else). Do these exist, are they humane, are they cost efficient, can they be carried into the field, and who makes them? Anybody?

Joshua: I seem to remember reading something long ago about marking reptiles with Freeze Branding, using liquid nitrogen and a cold branding iron? You might want to search back issues of Herp Review and see if you can locate the story. Perhaps this is what the person was talking about? JohnZ

Joshua: Try typing (marking reptiles with branding iron) into Google Web search, and you will find about 50 articles of using mini-branding irons to mark reptiles! Amazing! Best Regards JohnZ

Please explain PIT tagging. I'm working with Agkistrodons, so I want to be as careful as possible.
