I was wondering if any one could tell me how to sex a Mangrove. I have the yellow on black mangrove and its about 4' to 5'. I know how to sex a boa and python but not sure on the mangrove. This is my first venomous.

Using a probe is the most accurate method. It is easy once you have seen it done, but I am not about to try to talk you through it in writing.

I know to probe but what is the scale counts? Is a female two to four subcaudals. I know how to sex boas and pythons but I never sexed a Mangrove. Thank you for your reply.

I personally never bother with exact scale counts, because to try to memorize them for hundreds of captive species would be...well, tedius. To put it simply, males will always probe much deeper than females. If the probe goes in and seems to keep going, it's a boy. If you encounter a barrier within the first 1/8 to 1/2" or so, depending on the size of the snake, it's a girl. Of course this only works with adults. It's a whole other ball game with babies and juveniles, and in those cases, it's best to have multiple animals with which to compare. When you probe your mangrove, how deep does the probe go?

Excellent. By the way, there seems to be no lack of female mangroves floating around. Is this just coincidence, is the species female-heavy, or what? I've kept three mangroves, and two of them have been females. The vast majority I see advertised are females. The one male I did have was a monster, nearly 7' in length, so he was rather old when imported. Just something I've noticed...
