As a few of you may know I have recently aquired a Western Hognose who wouldn't feed ,then he shed then ate 3 small food items- FTpinkies, now he is simply looking interested and then carrying on as usual any movement of the food item results in a large hissing display Larry if you read this thread will I have to brain myself soon? LOL:)any suggestions appreciated. AS they are protected from collection I asume that I have a C.B. reptile if all else fails is live worth a try later on as it fed well first on F/T pinkies? Thanks K

Kieron: You could try live mice / pinks if you have access to them. If he does not eat then, you can freeze them for future food for him or other animals.
Very few snakes will starve them selves to death in captivity.
I was talking with Phillip today about a Crotalus horridus I have had for over 25 years, and I have only fed it like 5 or 6 times a year over all that time. It is not huge in body, but is not skinny and is very healthy. Many snakes in the wild are lucky to get a few meals a year. I think many folks often over-feed captive snakes to grow them up to breeding size. This unfortunatly shortens their life span.
I would not worry if the hognose snake does not eat for a couple of months, but after that, I would try to find a source of frozen toads to feed it. I would also look for signs of internal and external problems, like parasites, lack of a hide box, closeness to a predator snake like a king snate, temperature of the cage, burrowing substrate like sand, etc.
Hope this helps. JohnZ
