I am seeking any remedy for the control of this nusiance. I first noticed these (gnat-like flies) seem to like the smell of, and were attracted to, the dampness of the aspen I was using. I changed my substrate to a Super soil product, as I needed an environment conducive for 1.1 Bitis gaboonica. They (Bitis gaboonica) have flourished over the past five months on this substrate, seemingly more so than the aspen. However, I have noticed the gnats are back.
Any help in the eradication of this pest would be of great help to both myself and my reptiles.
Thank you,
Jonathan
p.s. any and all flora or fauna is processed, conditioned, and sterilized long before anything enters any habitat or enclosure.

Jonathan: I have never liked any of the commercial cage substrates. I prefer using news paper for back room reptiles, and colored marble gravel, or aquarium gravel for display animals. Many zoos use the colored gravells, and although they make mooving a cage difficult, they allow the moisture to flow to the bottom of the cage, and they look quite good also. As far as the flies, well, they are being attracted to a food / egg laying source. Remove the source of attraction and the flys will go away.

Yes, I believe a return to newspaper is in the near future. I did hope some other organic remedy could be found in time, but I guess there is nothing like the simplicity of newsprint.
Thank you,
Jonathan

If it is the small flies we have here, you can put out a small bowl with vinegar with a small squeeze of Dawn dishwashing liquid in it. The vinegar draws the flies and the soap traps them. August and September are usually our worst months.
