As I'm starting the path to becoming a herpetologist, I want to expand my library. Can anyone recomend some Must-have herp books to put in my way-too-small library?

Scott: Just wondering, what are some of the books you allready have?
There are so many great new books out there, and many are greatly high priced, but since these are up to date as far as scientific names and modern research, they probably would be the first you should purchase. Books like Whit Gibbon`s Snakes of the Southeastern States, Rom Whitticar`s new book on Indian Snakes, Janis Rose`s book on Coral Snakes, Johnathin Campbell`s book on Latin American Snakes, the list goes on and on into the thousands of dollars.
Later, you might want to find out of date books like Klauber`s Rattlesnakes, Wright and Wright`s Series of Books, and of course all the old collecting books like Ditmars, Kauffield, C.J.P. Ionedes, etc.
I will take a look at my library and come up with more ideas tomorrow, but by then they will probably be listed by others.
Also, you will want to subscribe to the Herpetologist League, and get Herp Review and Journal of Herpetology.
Best Regards JohnZ

Scott: Most of the books listed so far are snake books. Do you want suggestions on must have Turtle, Frog, Salamander, Crocodile, Lizard, Venoms and Toxicology, Taxonomy, Scientific Names, etc also?

Yes, please. Thank you all for your suggestions. I will take them all to mind. My "collection" as of now is mostly field guides and taxon guides. I'm just looking for more to add and increase my knowledge. I'll be starting my masters degree in animal science in the next 2 years, so I'll have a few books for my classes to add, but I want more personal study material. Thank you all again!

There is a book closeout wholesaler that I bet a lot of you do not know about, who often has really new books for up to 80% off published price. I have found some really great bargains on Herpetology and Scientific Books there over the years. Go to their web site, and request a subscription to their free catalogue, which is far better than trying to find books on their online store. Then look in the Nature, Science, Closeouts, Natural History sections. You will get a new catalogue about every 2 weeks. They charge a flat $3.50 shipping charge per order, it dosent mater if you buy one book or 100, it will still cost only $3.50. They are called Edward R. Hamilton Booksellers, and the web address is:

There is another one that has been around for many years. They tend to specialize in the more rare, out of print books.
