I am looking to buy a commercially manufactured incubator and needed input as to what the most durable and reliable brands are out on the market. I've been looking at several models (Hovobator, Lyon, Grumbach) and they range from resonably priced to insanely expensive. In particular, the Hovobator piques my interest but I have a few questions about this product. First, Big Apple Herp claims that you should buy a replacement snap switch and thermostat wafer. Is this necessary? How often do these parts fail? Being an electrician, I know most types of switches rarely fail. I know the function of the thermostat, but what is the actual function of the wafer? Is this the part that is subject to failure? Is it necessary to have a programmable thermostat to simulate natural night time temperature drops? I've bounced around on the net, but if anyone knows some good web-sites that you could direct me to it would be appreciated. Thanks!

The Hovobator looks like it would work well enough. If the wafer and switch ever stopped working, you could probably get replacements in a couple of days, but I dont think you should spend the money to keep them in stock just in case of a failure.
I really do not think that the eggs will care if you drop the temperature at night a few degrees. There have been many thousands of reptiles hatched that did not have this temperature change, they were just kept at a steady temperature.
Also, there have been many thousands of reptile eggs that hatched in zoos around the country without an incubator at all, inside of aquariums, tupperware, and wide mouth gallon jars. Sometimes these containers were in heated rooms, and sometimes the containers were placed on heat pads. I wonder if you really gain anything by buying a fancy incubator?

My thought exactly. However, the snakes I plan to breed command a fairly high price & are well sought after. I wanted a(n) reliable incubator to achieve a high sucess rate.
