Hi my Westen hognose has been feeding very strangely - to me, he started feeding well about three weeks ago then totally stopped, and 3 days ago fed again on an F/T fuzzie, and prior feeding between these times has been shunned, I have certainly learnt that there is no point in trying to make the prey item "look" alive as he will hiss violently and "bluff" strike enough to make me wonder if they ever truly try to "bite" in anger as they obviously, if pestered to much will feign death! anyone who has hognose experience or even a suggestion please post it as this is the only "difficult" feeder I own. apart from my male royal sorry dont want to post loads of questions but can a male royal sexually mature smell a much younger Female royal in a seperate tank as they cant be housed together yet as he dawarfs her massivly and im worried he may even try to mate as he has recently gone of his food since she has been around he has also tried many more prolonged escape atempts. I know some royals feed eratically but this is the first time with him, thanks if you have raed this whole post sorry I didnt split the topics up just saving space. Thanks Kieron.

Kieron: It sounds like the hognose still has some fear, but once he gets hungry, he overcomes the fear and eats. Maybee you should only try to feed him once every three weeks. That way, he will be good and hungry when you offer the food. I bet that over time he will become less and less scared when you offer food, and become a more reliable feeder.
As far as the Royal, it is quite possible from the behavior you described, that the male does smell the female. Even thought there is a large size difference, he has no way of knowing that. The female could be large enough to give off a scent that attracts the male, even though she is too small to be with him. Best Regards JohnZ
