One of the projects he started-the Irula Tribal Snake Catchers Cooperative-is one of the contestants in the
BBC/Newsweek/Shell World Challenge. Whoever gets the most votes wins the grand prize of $20,000. If Rom's co-op wins, the money will be used for radio telemetry studies (sorely needed) on the snakes released by the co-op after venom is extracted, so it can be discovered what becomes of the snakes afterward.
