I have been using pre-washed playground sand as a substrate for my Crotalus cerastes for several years now. I have never had a problem with it. On a few occasions, I have seen the snakes ingest a small amount of the sand while feeding, but have never had any of the snakes get impacted. I have kept all sizes of sidewinders on this substrate including neonates. Pre-washed playground sand is available at most home improvement outlets at a very inexpensive price. I hope this helps you out. Take care.
