We have a big problem in Bryan County Oklahoma. My grandparents live there and my father keeps his cattle there, more importantly my little boys goes there all the time fishing and we have just discovered that there is a major rattlesnake problem. I am so thankful that no one has been bit yet. My Dad has had two approx. 700 pound calves killed by these snakes and we just talked with one of my grandparents neightbors and he said he has killed 37 of them. We have to get something done before someone losses a life. please let us know how we can get some help with out anyone getting hurt. Thanks, Jackie

We understand that some people do this for sport and let them come and hunt these things out.

You're probably not going to find anyone in here that "hunts them for sport", but you may find someone willing to move or relocate them for you. You have to understand if there is a big rattlesnake problem, there is probably a big rodent problem as well. Those snakes are doing more good than bad being there, and it's their land as well. Killing every snake you see isn't going to solve your problem, when the food sources are depleted, the snakes will look elsewhere.
You have to educate your kids and family on safety when they are in the outdoors and snakes are around, it's like looking both ways when crossing the street. There are ways for people and rattlesnakes to co-exist, without harm being done to either.

i wish i had a rattlesnake problem......but lemme guess, the "killed" cattle is expensive, so these snakes are costing you humans money by living in their natural habitat.....try to have them collected and removed ALIVE....you could even sell them and make a little cash since money is obviously VERY important to you.
wretched snakes

Jackie,
Here is a number as well as the web address to the site that may be able to help you.

Also, I wanted to commend you on taking the extra time to try and do the right thing rather than just destroying the snakes.

i'm sorry, but what did she post that made you think she wanted to do it the "right way".......she didn't imply she wanted to have them safely removed.......even mentioned "hunting" them......she wants them gone, but i didn't see a thing that made me think she wanted them "safely removed".......to me, she comes across like most people, they're in HER way.......

Jackie took the trouble to post here and ask for help, and I bet there are some members here who live in her area who might help remove some of the rattlesnakes, and help her learn about them so she can educate her boys to be carefull, and possibly change areas that attract the snakes to food sorces. She could have just gone out and dynamited the den site and killed all of the rattlesnakes. Instead, she took the time to try to find a better solution.
We used to have a young man here from Oklahoma who hunted rattlesnakes in that area, and he had his own web site concerning snakes and spiders. I can not remember his name right off, but his nick name was something like spidersnake?, but I will look for it. I bet he knows someone in that area who might help.
As usual, Ricky chooses to criticise someone, without offering any usefull suggestion that might help Jackie with the rattlesnake problem. JohnZ

I reposted this reply from Matt(Dadee)to get rid of the redundant thread.

Jackie,
Before you have some cowboy come out and "gas" the den sites, be patient. We have a large number of members in the mid-west, who I'm more than sure can and will come out to help.
Some things that can help keep those would-be pesky rattlers away from the home is common moth balls. Sprinkle them around the outside of the house.
How many acres are you talking about? Where is the water source that your sons go to fish...is there a viable food source located there, for vermin? The key to this really is analyzing the food chain. If you move the food source for the vermin, chances are, their predators will also relocate, with one exception. If a den site is located on the property, snakes will venture back to this location each and every year to start their hibernation.
Those cowboys that come out to wrangle the snakes and dump them into large trash bins, with use of gasoline being pumped into their hiding spaces, merely kill the snakes. This interrupts the food chain and the balance that nature provides. If you kill off the snakes, the vermin thrive, likewise, the predators of the snakes won't have a food source and they too can die off.
We completely understand your predicament right now, but please be patient, as I'm more than sure someone from here will contact you with information, or pay a visit that could help.
Thank you for coming to us before resorting to the ultimate.
Matt

Thanks Al,
I was wondering about that whole thing.
Chip, you are 100% correct. She took the step to come to us, not us hearing about it on the news. Our first impression to her, should be, an informational and thorough response. If she came to us and posted, the last thing that she needs from us are jabs, insults or rude comments. As my first(or last, Thanks Al :-) ), post shows, I gave her a bit of information to analyze. I also inserted a bit of opinion with the information on the "cowboy wranglers".
Jackie, as you can see from above in all of the responses, ricky's excluded, we are trying to offer up some information if at all possible. Please do keep checking back on this thread under your original post for replies, there most definitely will be information that can help or at least point you in the right direction.
Once again, thank you for coming to us prior to utilizing the other option.
Matt
