I should have looked on Snopes first, they always have the low down.
This rumor: http://www.snopes.com/critters/snakes/waterski.htm
Snakes in general:

This is a really old rumor that I remember hearing when I was a kid.

This entire story seems to be incoherent jibberish. First of all, I've was bitten by a EDB years ago and if there is anyone who could sleep through that, they would be a freak of nature because it hurts like hell, instantaneously. Second of all, there are only two different antivenoms available in that part of the country which cover every species. Thirdly, if one were to die from envenomation, it would most likely be in 72 hours or less, if one lived for six months, then this hypothetical individual's immune system would have neutalized the venom long ago. Not to mention the symptoms seem more akin to some disease like Ebola, Hemmorhagic fever, or Tuberculosis; which would also explain the supposed contagious factor mentioned which is obvious B.S. if the "snake bite" actually was the cause, unless you happen to be some sort of hypochondriac who believes they have every new disease they here about on the news. But hey, that's just my opinion.
