Kieron: There should not be too much danger of trace metals from the new water heater.
The inner lining is usually a glass ceramic material, and the metal fittings have some oily residue.
There is also residue from the flux that was used in soldering the pipe joints.
If you run a few loads of laundry on the hot cycle, and take a few hot showers, and wash a couple of sink loads of dishes with hot water, most all of the contaminats will have flushed out, as they dissolve better in hot water.
You might want to run a couple of gallons of water after that into a large cooking pot or pail, and let it sit in a still place a couple of hours. Put it near a sunny window. Then if there is any oily residue still coming out through the water, it will float to the top, and form a very slight oil slick that you can see if you look at the water surface from an angle into the sunny direction.
If you see that oil slick, run some more hot water loads to help flush more of the inside of the tank.
Hope this helps. JohnZ
