Good morning everyone, last night I was setting at a café talking to a friend of mine. Well to make a long story short, the subject of Fang Size came up and he asks me what the Largest Fangs in the world was? Well, I first told him that Bitis gabonica ( Gaboon Viper ) held the record on the Largest Fangs. Then, he asks me what the Largest Fangs in comparison to Body Size were. Was I correct in telling him that Calloselasma rhodostoma ( Malayan Pitviper ) has the Largest Fangs in comparison to Body Size than any other Snake? I hope that my recollection was correct, if not I probably taught this friend of mine something totally wrong. ..........................Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

To behonest I wouldn't know the answer to that. I remember reading some where that within Australia, the Death Adder has the longest fangs when compared with body mass. Just my input and food for thought.

That would make for some interesting pics, Al. Can you take some photo's of your dwarf bitis' fangs?.....and no I want you to pin them and show them off with a Bic. Maybe when they are eating?

John, I remember Working with a (Bothrops asper) wile I was Working at the Zoo. She had some of the most Vicious Looking Fangs I have ever seen. I never got to measure them, but I would take a lucky guess and say they were every bit of 1-11/2 in. in length. She was about a 5 ft. Snake, with one Hell of a Temper. She always gave me a run for my money “LOL”. ..............Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

Yes, it would be cool and interesting however, I almost never pin a snake because:
It increases your chance of seeing those long fangs get buried into your fingers. (learned this when I was 17)
It's not good for the animal overall not to mention the possibility that it dies because of injuries sustained.
I know visually that they are really long by watching them "re-set" after a meal.
I actually seldon bother them for it stresses the animal, got good long term for them. I only move them around or tube them when it is required for a medical treatment or my personal safety.
Aspers do have one hell of a long set of fangs!!

Hi all ,Al would there ever be a chance of being able to retrive a shed fang (if visible) from a bitten prey item I know its a bit far out there just a thought I know that it would be extremely difficult to notice do most bitis keep a hold of there prey item after striking or do they let 'em go and hunt 'em down when the venom has acted upon the prey.If they did let go then a shed fang may be a very slim possibilty, not to mention the stress involved to the snake when "interfearing" with the feeding routine. like I said very small miniscule even, but anyone involved in Milking venom must stand a much better and easier way of recovering a shed fang. I have seen a EDB skull (picture) that had three fangs in various stages of development on one side how normal is that? so to all who read this has anyone got any true measurements and would the thickness of the fang come into it if so then the only reliable way to tell the largest, and largest in relation to body size wouls be by weight I assume:) just a bit of a ramble but there are some
interesting questions in there!some where!.Also you could in theory, use the weight of the fang and the weight of the snake to achive relative fang size to body mass;) in theory then though would you need both fangs which fang if ther are multiples etc. So there could be a huge debate over this one look forward to seeing some progress!Kieron.

The easiest way to recover or find shed fangs is when cleaning the enclosure to look in the feaces. As you mentioned, during feeding snakes often dislodge a fang which tends to be swallowed and passed out the other end. I have recovered a few this way and have clear taped them to a piece of black card board, to pass around school talks that I some times give.
