Hi everyone I am blessed with a son of 3.5 years old who can easily identify around 13-15 different snakes from Gaboons to grass snakes, but I need some ideas to keep his learning interesting as he really is learning about reptiles as a whole rapidly, apart from zoos what other ideas does anyone have to keep him so intrigued by snakes, he especially loves the Spitting cobras and he seems to have an affinity with them I would dearly love to be able to show him a spitter but that aint easy in Africa net alone England. a normal cobra would be great but apart from zoos what else I have a few "games" that we play but ultimatly I would love to take my wife and son on holiday to America or Australia and visit some of the worlds best reptile parks but still I need some ideas for during the week so I can make his learning fun even though he loves snakes and probably will always love them. Thanks Kieron and Jake.

Whenever I was around that age I had that same passion for the world's scaly denizens and what I enjoyed the most was reading about them. Try getting your little one some new books or articles or magazines. Zoobooks are easy to read and understand and have a good deal of information for younger kids. This not only keeps his interest, but also helps with his reading skills so it's a win-win situation. The internet also has a lot of neat stuff (like this site here). And, if you feel comfortable, take him on a little trip to the woods and have a small herping venture. Just make sure ya'll are safe when doing so. Hope this helps. - David Mead

Try here for books http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/026-8363037-1238040
The "Library Binding" books I've bought in the past for my son, good pic's and text suitable for his age, at the time (4-5).

why not just let your kid be interested in what he's interested in......he's 3.5, no need to force him to learn the latin names of all species right now....what if he grows up and just doesn't care about snakes.....i encourage my kids to learn about what they wanna learn about........as long as they're interested in something, then it's all good.......if you force them to "care" about something, then you've failed like 99% of all parents........encouragement is worth more than anything.....individualism is just swell......

I think exposing them to all aspects of science and the animal kingdom is a better way to go about this. Take him to zoos, planetariums, science museums and get him a subscription to --> http://www.zoobooks.com/
Most of the upper echelon within this community tend to have a broad knowledge of many different subjects.

I don't consider myself as an "expert" on venomous reptiles, but I think I know my stuff when it comes to learning. The best way in my opinion: hands on.
I would try to get some info on the snakes in your area, learn whats venomous and whats not. Then take your son into the field, flip over some rocks, show him what you find. That should keep him much more intrested in snakes than any book would.
Hope I helped,
Chris

Hi all and thankyou for your suggestions as I said he ALREADY HAS A FACINATION and LOVE for all things reptilian and I certainly have NOT tried to force him to learn anything he didn't want to as he is strong willed enough to say "daddy I dont want to learn about snakes" please credit him with some common sense, this is in reply to the previous post suggesting I was "forcing" him to like reptiles-NOT SO.
To all others who genuinely seemed to care thankyou very much we have just started a book called The proper care of snakes by Armin Geus. covers everything in an easy format,He(Jake) did come out on a small herping day for grass snakes Slowworms and common lizards, He loved it and we collected and re-located over 30 slowworms in that single day.(because of there impending capture by local kids). So thankyou again and I will follow up the links as soon as I have the time. Kieron+Jake.

My daughter is 7, and I had this problem with her a few years ago. While I still let her watch the snakes in their cages (while in the room of course with her) I got her interested in snakes and lizards too. She could hold these with supervision and that sparked an entire new passion for herps. Kids learn very well with hands on experience, and this has helped her alot.
Good luck,
Will
