I am trying to find out if anyone knows if pigmies can retain sperm and if so for how long? I have had my female for about 2 1/2 years, she was with a male before I got her. She stopped eating about 6 weeks ago and has become increasingly active over the last two weeks. Also she has become very fat about the last two thirds of her body. Any ideas will be helpful.
Thanks
Augie

Hey Augie, going off feed for six weeks this time of the year wouldn't concern me too much.Mine have gone much longer than that. This is the time of the year that they would normally be hibernating.Has she deficated in those 6 weeks? You might try soaking her in luke warm water for an hour or so if she hasn't.As far as retaining sperm, they can and do, but I'm not sure if they can for 2 1/2 years.I'm not positive, but that sounds a little long to me.Maybe someone else can add some info on that.Marty

She hasn't ate since the last time she defectated.
I know 2 1/2 years seems to long for retaining sperm, however I figured I should ask anyway. What else could cause her to luck gravid if she's not?
Do they swell up when they ovulate????

Yes! They can retain sperm for a considerable time. It's called delayed implantation. Some snakes have been known to keep sperm up to 5 years before fertilizing! This amazing process is a natural miracle. When environmental times are not optimal, the female stores the sperm until environmental conditions are more favorable for parturition. It sounds to me like you have provided a favorable environment for your snake & she may indeed be gravid!

Thank you for the help. Now I guess I will just have to wait and see. I kinda doubt that I could talk my Vet into giving her a first response test. LOL Again thank you very much. If any one else has any other ideas please let me know.

Is there any way to tell for sure if she is gravid other than just waiting??? Do they go thru a pre shed before birth? Does anyone know how long gestiation is???
Thanks Augie

For obvious reasons, I can't asess if your snake is/is not gravid. I would err on the side to assume your snake may indeed be gravid. I therefore would stop handling her to AVOID STRESS and just wait and see what transpires. Make sure that your cage is suited for parturition requirements for your snake. Sorry, I can't give you a definative answer wether or not your snake is gravid or not.

I made a mistake in estimating the time I have had my pigmy....The last time she was with a male was June of 2004....That makes it even more likely she is gravid......Does any one know if pigmies go thru a pre shed before giving birth? Or if there are any signs right before birth?
Thanks
Augie
