This maybe another of my dumb questions, but for those bitten by venomous snakes esp exotics, how much did it cost...after insurance that is.

That's a very hard question to answer. The first question is will your insurance cover a "Captive snakebite" at all? Some will, some won't. It's not the sort of question you can ask them ahead of time because then they will certainly not cover it.

Good info...didn't know they could be classified as "captive snake bites, but gave it some thought, and can see that being documented, and ins co investigating. Has anyone had that type claim denied?

Hey ya’ll, I can see were most Insurance Companies would refuse to give you coverage. But, next to Bull Riding and Rodeo Clowns, Venomous Keeping is not that dangerous. I have known a lot of Bull Riders in my life and Rode for a Year or Two myself. I see no reason why they should Insure Rough Stock Riders and not Venomous Keepers. To me it makes no sense, dose it to ya’ll? On average, Bull Riders get hurt every 2 weeks, and Clowns get hurt a lot more than that. When I rode, I had Blue Cross Blue Shield, now this Company actually Insured more Bull Riders than any other I have seen. It dose not make sense to me for a Insurance Company to turn you down, when you are not in the most Dangerous of Groups. I know they have the right to do what they will, but I think it’s gone just a little too far. .........................Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

It's probably because you weren't riding the physical form of Satan, wasn't it? Kidding of course. There is obviously a huge bias between the "respectable cowboy" who puts his life on the line for a meaningless jaunt on an aggravated, more often than not physically abused bull, and a devoted reptile hobbyist who just happens to have an interest in some of the venomous representatives of the group.

I don't deal with billing at all, but I have a feeling that it would be more of an issue after the fact...as in someone investigating a "high dollar" claim. Would open them up to lawsuits for refusing coverage. Still curious about costs of bites...domestic vs exotic...hemotoxic vs neurotoxic.

It really does not matter what bites you for the most part, if A/V is used a typical Cottonmouth bite runs about $30,000 with just a few vials of serum. Since the hospital can carge as much as they want for A/V $2,000 to $4,000 per vial for CroFab, it's easy to rack up a very large bill. A recent EDB bite took 21 vials of CroFab and a few days in the hospital.

Last year's misadventure in the swamp totaled over $13,000.00: Mild cottonmouth envenomation, 1.5 days in hospital, 4 vials crofab, 1 seriously sore arm (all in the pursuit of science!). Thank goodness I have great insurance.
