I don't think ANY arboreal Pit Viper is a good beginner snake.
However, if I had to pick btw the 2, I would vote for T. wagleri.

I started with a White-Lip and in my limited experience it made the best choice for me. Being an arboreal, its colorful and displays well, but this species is still small enough and relaxed enough to keep handling from being too difficult. The other nice thing about arboreals is that they are easy to keep on a hook.
For me I didn't want to start with a copperhead, because at no point did I want to own a copperhead, so buying one just to learn with, and then selling seemed irresponsible to me.
And it may be just my individual, but I find that my white-lip has quite a bit of personality. Its always out exploring the enclosure, and is much more entertaining to observe than my Atheris, which just kinda sits on his branch 24/7, and strikes if I get too close.
If its down to a Wagler or a White-Lip, I'd go with the White-Lip, its smaller and likely to be more active. Also, if I was going to get tagged, I'd rather it be a White-Lip than a Wagler.

I heartily agree with Al. The three who responded just answered a person with a female board name, with a real name that is male, & you guys haven't a clue whether this is a twelve year old kid or what. Whoever it is can't even spell arboreal.
