Hi Everyone:
I just read this thread on Dr. Fry's forum this morning. Anyone who keep venomous needs to read this. It's an important lesson learned the hard way.
Best,
Al

Thanks Al! Honestly I had no idea something like that could happen. Gee I keep rhinos...that could have easily happen to me too, just without the happy ending...

I have heard of (mild) envenomation occurring from the dust raised by scraping dried venom with a razor without adequate cross ventilation. Though my memory is not what it used to be, I seem to recall that the only envenomation Raymond Ditmars ever suffered occurred that way.
I have a few ill tempered individuals, C atrox and C o helleri in particular, who regularly strike at anything passing the cage and smear sometimes copious amounts of venom over the (acrylic) front panels. I use a sponge or cloth, dampened with distilled water, to clean the resultant mess off. At least it doesn’t raise a toxic dust cloud. Why take a chance? At worst, the precaution can't hurt.
For what it’s worth (probably very little), I have more clean up problems with crabbed out Crotalus than with Naja spitters.

Please humor me for just a moment: If a vial of X antivenom neutralizes X milligrams of venom, how many milligrams of venom can a shed fang contain? Everyone here seems to be sold on the idea of "dry bites", so how can a fang which is not attached to a venom gland deliver enough venom to require 8 vials of antivenom? The science points elsewhere on this particular case history.

Good point Chris. I'll admit I didn't think it through. I had never considered the possibility. Thanks for giving a little perspective.

Allow me to add experience with B.arietans bite to the mathematics. Nearly forty years ago, I managed to impale the middle finger of my right hand on the fang of a puffadder while force feeding it. My treatment consisted of two 10cc vials of SAIMR antivenin injected intra-muscularly, and spending the afternoon & night in the hospital for observation. I was back at work the next day. To this day, I have a dimple in the finger tip caused by necrosis, but that's all. I personally cannot fathom the need for 8 vials of antivenin for what would have been a very nearly dry bite.
