Hi All,
I was just reading the Venomous News items and read about the unfortunate incident of a Mr Jim West. It states in the article that he was bitten by a copperhead! Has it been confirmed that its is indeed a copperhead? According to my knowledge (Please clarify me on this)there has been no reported deaths from copperhead bites! Could Mr Wests' age have anything to do with it (65). I doubt it!
Regards,
Quintin

I can verify thet there have been no deaths in SC from copperheads for as long as DHEC has been keeping records of death certificates. All snakebite deaths in SC have been from "rattlesnakes" on the coastal plain

There was a death in Alabama?? a few years ago but it was from Anaphalxis not from the venom effects. He had been bitten by Agkistrodons before and developed a sensitivity that killed him.

There are a lot of un-answered questions in a death like this from a Copperhead bite.
Do we have a possitive ID on the snake ? There are a lot of Rattlesnakes in Texas .
How big was the Copperhead ?
Did he step on it and get a full dose of venom ?
Was the bite directly into a Vein or Artery ?
What was the mans health like ?
Is it possible he was so scared he died of a Heart Attack or Stroke ?
Was there Anaphalxis ?
Was Anti-Venom administered ?
How long did it take him to get to a hospital ?
Did he run for help after being bitten ?
Perhaps the Texas paper will post a follow-up article.

The one that died in Alabama was most likely bitten by a juvenile cottonmouth. Witnesses said he caught it swimming across a stream. That said, it was a reaction to the antivenin and not the bite itself that killed him
